I don't know when they "went out" but the car has 115k on it right now, I bought it with 101k.

The right-front and left-rear were very noisy and rough. Once I got the brake calipers off, both has massive amounts of play in them.

I changed all 4 just to be thorough.

    Yeah, a few.

I borrowed an axle puller and a slide hammer from AutoZone.

I used to the axle puller to remove the front hubs and to push the rear axles out of the rear hubs. I used the slide hammer to pull the rear hubs out of the bearings.

I borrowed the SIR B90 BMW rear wheel bearing tool set from another BFc member to press the old rear bearings out, the new rear bearings in and to press the rear hubs back into the new bearings.

Many people have done the rear bearings without the B90 tool, but I don't think I could have.

The fronts took me about 2 hours, the rears took about 6.

In addition to those, you'll need a couple of other tools you might not already have:
    46mm socket for the front axle nuts ( I couldn't find a 46mm, so I used a 1-13/16")
30mm 12-point socket for the rear axle nuts
Snap ring pliers for the big snap rings that retain the rear bearings in the trailing arms
E12 star drive socket for the bolts that hold the inner CV joints to the differential

Nice. I still have the fronts and a rear that'll probably go soon. IMO, the job is much more intimidating reading about it but having done one of my rears it wasn't bad at all. And I did it without any special tools.

Inner race of the bearing usually stays pressed onto the hub when you take it off. Bearing separates into outer race & bearings in your hand, and inner race stuck on teh hub. Notching gives it enough room to slide right off.

I cut three notches, at 12, 3 and 9 o'clock (looking at the hub end-on). Then I used a chisel to crack the bearing race at the 12 o'clock notch and it slid right off.

That part is the inner race of the old wheel bearing. It comes out stuck to the hub when you pull the hub.

The new bearing goes in as one piece. It's inner races are all part of the assembly.

You know, I had never much liked the small deck lid (ACS Style?) spoilers... But in the picture with your back wheels off, it looks really good. Kinda wish I was Avus Blue as well...

I bought the car with that on there.

I'm still not sure whether I like it or not.

It's not about getting from point A to B, it's about every curve in between.

Very nice job. I agree with you on the being thorough. Your already deep in the project why not just get them all done. Always love seeing guys dive into these bigger projects.
