New wheel bearings all the way around =
did you need new bearings or did you just decide to change them for the hell of it?
Wait until you upgrade/replace the suspension...

how many miles when they went out?
- Keith
oh wait...I own an e36!
I don't know when they "went out" but the car has 115k on it right now, I bought it with 101k.
The right-front and left-rear were very noisy and rough. Once I got the brake calipers off, both has massive amounts of play in them.
I changed all 4 just to be thorough.
Did you need any sspecial tools to remove them?
Yeah, a few.
I borrowed an axle puller and a slide hammer from AutoZone.
I used to the axle puller to remove the front hubs and to push the rear axles out of the rear hubs. I used the slide hammer to pull the rear hubs out of the bearings.
I borrowed the SIR B90 BMW rear wheel bearing tool set from another BFc member to press the old rear bearings out, the new rear bearings in and to press the rear hubs back into the new bearings.
Many people have done the rear bearings without the B90 tool, but I don't think I could have.
The fronts took me about 2 hours, the rears took about 6.
In addition to those, you'll need a couple of other tools you might not already have:
46mm socket for the front axle nuts ( I couldn't find a 46mm, so I used a 1-13/16")
30mm 12-point socket for the rear axle nuts
Snap ring pliers for the big snap rings that retain the rear bearings in the trailing arms
E12 star drive socket for the bolts that hold the inner CV joints to the differential
Random pics from doing the rear bearings yesterday:
Nice. I still have the fronts and a rear that'll probably go soon. IMO, the job is much more intimidating reading about it but having done one of my rears it wasn't bad at all. And I did it without any special tools.

Wow you have to cut a cap off the bearing or something? Looks intense!

^ so do you have to replace that part too or does it go back on even with those cuts on it?? sorry for the stupid question I'm a noob at this lol. I was going to attempt to do it today but autozone didn't have any slide hammers available
Thanks for the pics and descriptions. I paid $350 to do just one rear bearing.

You know, I had never much liked the small deck lid (ACS Style?) spoilers... But in the picture with your back wheels off, it looks really good. Kinda wish I was Avus Blue as well...
1997 328is.
I get alot of compliments about mine, some people even said it made it look like an e46 m3 (ofcourse not a big resemblence).
Very nice job. I agree with you on the being thorough. Your already deep in the project why not just get them all done. Always love seeing guys dive into these bigger projects.
