    What Speaker Size?

Hello everyone. I just purchased a 1997 740il so I'm new to the E38 forum . I'm loving this car so far.

Anyways, I have a question regarding the speaker sizes. All of my speakers seem to be blown and I need to replace them.

From what I've read, I know the rear deck speakers are 6"x9". But what sizes are in the doors? And correct me if I'm wrong, but are those tweeters I see at the top of each door? 10 speakers total?

    Thanks for any help.

The rear deck is not 6x9, their 6.5". The doors are 5.25" and there are 2 tweeters in each front door, 1 in each rear door. Then you've got the 4 rear deck (2 on each side). 14 Speakers total.

No problem. The rear deck can be converted to 6x9 using adapters, bu tI have yet to find them.

I just pulled the rear deck speakers out and measured. I'm pretty sure they're 5.25".

Am I supposed to measure from each edge of the speakers or from each screw hole?

visionblade you are partially right, the rear deck speakers are not 6.5" as commonly thought and even as represented on crutchfields website. They are close to 5.25" but I have seen on bimmerboard where even those did not fit, particularly because of the strange shape of the backside of the speaker enclosure (the plastic underneath where the speaker mounts). Last week I asked here if anyone knew what size the rear deck speakers were and received no answers so I will be watching this thread carefully. Good Luck

bmtroubleyou, what exactly do you mean? There is one midrange in each door if that answers your question.

I'll try with my limited knowledge. They are 5.25's in a 6.5 hole. Due to the shape of the housing it would be hard to find replacements unless you have intimate knowledge of what brands make those type of shapes. Try this site and see
    http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/index.php
Hope this helps you, or better yet hope they help you. I've never tried this place so Good luck!!

Are the bigger ones in the front and rear doors woofers or midranges?

    Thanks

The correct term for those is midbass, it's pretty self explanatory.

    Thanks AwesomeIsLuke.

I ask because I would like to replace all speakers in my car and keep the DSP amp. I was not able to find the info for the frequency range of the original speakers. They replacements should have the correct specs.
Are the two small fronts in each door both tweeters?

    Thanks

Crutchfield is awesome for finding the right size speakers, and then I recommend ebay to find the same speakers for cheaper. Sometimes crutchfield has amazing combo deals and sales though so it might be better to just buy from them. Plus their customer service is excellent.

So what happened? Did you guys ever find the correct size?
If I can't find the back speakers, I'm just gonna be forced to recone them the old fashion way.

Oh my G! are those the speakers that BMW install in their cars?? You can read the word "cheap" everywhere. Cardboard cones, foam suspension and stamped frames are by far the cheapest kind of speakers you could possibly find. Also 5.25 inches by no means could deliver enough low frequency.
It looks like my 1998 740, is in need of a sonic fashion emergency right now, at least on the speakers side. I don't want to replace the radio yet because 95% of the audio quality is on the speakers. I have had very good experience with the DLS brand so I'll take a look on what they have to offer and I'll lett you know.

Answering to BMTROUBLEYOU, the common freq resp of a crappy speaker like this one is 90-10.000 Hz. For a 1 inch tweeter is 3.000-18.000 Hz. Almost any speaker of the correct size and from a reputed brand will perform better than the originals.

    Regards,

    Peter.

I believe this site has the best replacement speakers. From what I see. all they do is make bmw enginered products(only for us). it even has the right connecters!!! for $400 you get eight speekers thats:

4 mid bass @ about 100 a pair= what you would expect to spend
4 tweeters @ about 100 a pair= which would be exceptable for quailty tweeters

only thing is the subs are not in the deal, they cost $800

Getting used oem speakers are the next best i guess, but I honestly believe if any one were to upgrade all speakers using their products the outcome would be hell raising

Has anyone here did the full upgrade $1,200

Reviving an old thread, I need an alternative for the four speakers in the rear shelf. What do you recommend I get. I dont mind these if someone confirms they will work and fit. Just need anything.

    Hello guys & gals,
I've been having the damnest time trying to find subwoofers for my girl "2000 740il" and I finally found a place in New Jersey that repairs BMW speakers. His name is:
Rich Stamer, Sound Remedy, 331 Virgina Ave., Collingswoods, NJ 08108. (856) 869-0238. He's been in business since 1987 and is the owner/operator of Sound Remedy Loudspeaker Repair Service. I spoke with him and I'm bringing my woofers from the rear window to him on Memorial Day 5/26/14 to have them reconed and/or refoamed. The prices are VERY REASONABLE: 6" diameter recone fee = $35 and 6" refoam fee = $21.00

I'm in the process of customizing the entire interior of my girl and before the rear seat goes back in I need the speakers replaced. I'll add pix to my next reply. So all of you bmw lovers in central jersey, south jersey and philadephia: check out Sound Remedy @ http://www.soundremedynj.com
    smooches! :-)
