Just recently purchased a 97 328i and am planning to do a full tune-up, just wondering what kind of oil you guys would recommend on a 328i with 174k miles on it. I'm new to the BMW
well i like mobile 1 but it's pricey. you can go longer between oil changes though which is nice and there's very little breakdown in the oil. synthetic really is the shit.

I personally would recommend some good mineral oil 5w30 or 10w40 weight depending on your weather conditions (use a lighter oil for colder climate) and change it every 5000 miles with a good oil and air filter. It is unlikely you will see the bennefit of a synthetic oil unless you are tracking/racing the car or are running some high performance upgrades, so save your money.
As far as oil brand, Castrol is known for having the best mineral oil, and at less than $3/quart, you can't go wrong. When talking about filter brands, Purolator makes what is probably the best retail line filters. The filters from the dealership are going to be top-notch quality, but will likely cost double the price of a Purolator filter. Your other option is to go and buy some good aftermarket ones online like Mann, though after shipping, you just have to weight the options. With all honesty, they will all probably do about the same job, so it is just a question on convience and price.
I run Mobil1 0W-40 in my 216k 328i.
My mechanic recommended me 10w-40 castrol or mobil 1 for my high mile. It's higher viscosity and for higher mileage cars.
Factory oil weight is 5w30 full synthetic. You can play with the weights, but I not compromise on using full synthetic.
alright thanks for the info. have any of you ever replaced one qt of oil with Lucas Oil Stabilizer
I personally don't mess with oil additives. If they could make oil better, I think the oil companies would just make it better, and charge another dollar per quart.
I wouldn't use Lucas. Take a look at bobistheoilguy.com for a third party test of Lucas. It foams like crazy.
I disagree about not running synthetic unless you mod'ed your car. BMW spec's synthetic from the factory so why would you want to step back to a lower grade dino oil? If you have VANOS do not run a 50w oil. It may be a little thick to flow through the small cavities. I also like the factory Mann filters. They are high quality and not that much more than any other name brand. If purchase from autohausaz.com you get free shipping over $50.
Here's a thread with BMW-LL spec'd oil.

Porfeo says, "choose oil wisely or you will get a check Unicorn light".
SRSBSNS 10-40 Mobil1 winter 15-40 Mobil1 summer.
Mobil 1 has makes my engine very noisy. It makes my Audi A6 very noisy too.
I use any synthetic 10-30 in the winter. I go with synth mainly because it flows better at -20F, which is is close to what it is here in MN every morning.
Plain old dino old is fine, at least with the early engines. I'm very happy with Chevron Delo 15-40.
Bentely says 15-40 above 20F; 5-30 below 50F.
I've got 240,000 miles, and use/burn no oil on 3k oil change intervals. Must be doing something right.
I don't run and 15-40 in anything any more. You can easily get away with much thinner oils nowadays. Especially with a synthetic. They don't break down any where near as easily. Some cars are even spec'ing 0-20 right from the factory. There is a big change in thinking in the car engineering world. Thick is no longer needed.

I get what your saying, I just am not willing to switch at this point. LOL. What weights and brands are running. Royal Purple, Pennzoil, or what?
Amsoil in the engines of all. Royal Purple syncromax in the manual tranny of my car.
And ya.... why change if you are happy? I'm not suggesting you change unless it is for some reason such as for extended drain intervals or something.
