Has anyone managed this with an 18 Button OBC? It's a little different. Got a line burnt out across the clock.

(The clock on the 18 button is pixelated unlike the 11 button)

    Question Now what?

I pulled my OBC out and pulled it apart. Great instructions.
When I got the circuit board away from the plastic peice, the entire display came off of the circuit board. It looks like it was glued to the board. The bad thing is... I cant see any contacts on the ribbon cable. Any Suggestions??
Can I drive my car without this installed?

I've done that very thing... Twice! You can try to put the ribbon cable back to the board (I tried and failed..Twice!)
You can drive without it, sure. Just put it back together and reinstall it in the car until you get a replacement

I am trying to put it back together as I type this. Got a little bit of electronics circuit glue to hold the ribbon cable in place and waiting for the glue to dry completely. I will update as soon as I can. Hopefully it will work. I hope, I hope, I hope!!

Mine partially separated but went back together fine. If I hadn't been very careful it would have torn itself off under its own weight. I'm not sure about glue however. I would expect dead or dim lines over the glued areas. Good luck.

Thanks for posting your repair tips for the cluster OBC information display. The cluster display on my 2002 e39 530i is still fine, but the display on the MID (below CD player) is missing one horizonal row of pixels. I guessing the steps you outlined will be basically applicable to the MID as well? Anything in particular I should know about MID pixel repair?
    Thanks,
    Gordon

I did this fix last year, but still have a number of bad pixels.
Intend to do it again and see if I can get it working better.
One thing I thought to point out.
These connections very fragile/tenuous; I think that if you clean up BOTH the display and spot where it fits into connector, that might make some difference.
Some of those dead pixels may well be from oils on your skin preventing a good connection.
Cleanup with Q-trip and 95+% rubbing alcohol.... NOT the standard 70% or 80% versions, high-test version makes a real difference here

Shouldn't this be moved to the DIY section?

I found the post a couple of weeks ago, came back and looked through the DIY's, looked again and again.

Did a search and found it again, but it makes no sense for it to be here and NOT in the DIY's.

    Tape specifics

What are the specifics on the tape people are using for this (i.e. 1.33mm 0.25" 3M VHB double-sided foam)? And where are you guys finding this tape? I've tried Lowes/Home Depot, and OfficeMax, but no luck. I was thinking of trying a crafts store (like Michaels) next. Ideas?

    Thanks!

I tried with 3M wall double tape. Doesn't seems working. When I tried to take it off, it pulled off the plastic circuit that attached to the screen. I'm looking for circuit adhesive to attach it back on. Any suggestion?

Thanks to OP - spent no more than 20 mins last night doing this fix and it worked a treat for me too!

    Cheers

I used some self adhesive rubber I had lying around in a drawer. I think anything that is the right thickness (~2mm) that you can adhere in place will do the trick.

A dab of black silicone works well for the button fix (as it's flexible and will keep the bond in place). Use a toothpick while it's wet to poke the hole through the centre for the part that makes contact with the button.

    off topic issue:

So all of the back lights on my 11 button OBC go on and off periodically. No bulbs are burnt, and they all go on and off together.

I can see the liquid crystal working, but no back lights... When the school term is over, I'll take it apart and get in there with my DMM. anyone have any idea's though?

Hi, I am sosa. I was wondering. The conductive band attached to the LCD screen came off my circuit board. Did you by any chance attach yours back successfully?

I had my OBC working at 90%, and got anal and wanted to fix it 100%.
    Now it is a mess.
What type of glue did u use?
    Any advice would be great.

Hi; did u manage to find the proper adhesive, I have the same problem.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Believe me, you cannot fix it permanently your-self as this ribbon has lost it's original conductive "glue" caused by high temperature inside the cluster and you cannot reproduce it. The only 100% working solution is replace it with a brand new one ribbon film and give it a new life for another 7 years. Just type "BMW Instrument Display Pixels Repair" in eBay search or visit us directly at www.speedofix.com for that repair.

I think this was basically suggested a few posts up but I wanted to add my 2 cents for anyone else fixing a broken button on their OBC. I used RTV silicone gasket maker (the blue stuff). I just masking taped the broken tab into the proper place and dabbed some on where it broke off. I also filled up the space between it and where it gets pressed down to. I made sure it didn't cover the hole but put enough in that it would spring back after the button was pressed. Worked like a charm and the feel is exactly the same as the other buttons.
