that is a lot of usefull info there peeps. my 93 318is is doing the same thing....i thought it was normal....i just recently got the car like a month ago. well i guess i will have to see if i can fix this prob. when i got the car i tuned it up a little bit....spark plugs, oil, filters, a coule of breather hoses that were all messed up, the wires still look good so i didn't mess with those. i have a question though. do you have to run unleaded plus...or can you just run regular?

Question - if your sensor was bad, did your gauge show an incorrect reading? If it's my temp sensor...

    Any progress with this?
    a32guy?

Also, is there a way to test if this could be the temperature sensor? Would disconnecting this sensor produce different results?

man this is getting old huh guys...

so im one of the lucky ones to be having fun hunting down this problem....its driving my crazy...and to top it off more things pop up...at first the car only hessitated and missfired under load at low rpms same as everyone else around 2or 3k....also i have the wierd crusing idle problem but when i stop its gone...but now after changing plugs...coils....fuel filter...and other misc things my car seems to be smoking alot today...never noticed it before....but noticed it tonight since it was dark and rainy...so now this also has me worried...what u guys think???...also something that has me thinking is someones post about the temp sensor..and that fixing the problem...reason it has me thinking is cuz i recently changed water pump, hoses, thermostat, and the other day my car starting reading it was hot...so i am wondering is this could be the culprit of all my problems...i dont need to worry about the vanos due to my 325 being a 92....but this is driving me nuts!!!!..

No progess yet. Car is sitting outside, I'm at school

My vanos did arrive. I will be going home this weekend. I will be replacing the o2 sensor first. If that doesn't work, coolant temp sensors. If that doesn't work and my buddy can come through with the cam tools, I'll swap the vanos units.

    Keep your fingers crossed.

    Same prob here

I have a 99 323i and I notice that in cooler weather, the car runs amazing. But when it seems to be driven for awhile and in the hot weather (I live in FLorida) it seems to hesitate at take-off. Sometimes it's so bad it looks and feels like I don't know how to drive a stick. The problem clears when I hit around 3k RPM and everything is smooth. Sometime I have to take-off at around 2k RPM just to make it NOT stutter and shake. There are tons of usefule information in this thread, but damn, where do I start. I have already replaced the fuel filter recently so I guess I can just go down the list.

    i used...

i didnt clean the crank sensor...i just got a new one...the plugs i used bosch 4's...and the fuel filter isnt horrible...your gonna spill a lil gas its impossible not to...best thing to do is take out the fuse for the fuel pump crank it a couple times and clear that last bit of gas...your gonna see it under your car on the drivers side....i pulled out the bottom hose first and pluged it...then the top and pulled it out the bottom...it actuallt only took about half an hour...not to bad at all...if u have a lil patiance youll get it...its just a tight spot...have fun if u get at it...thats what its about at the end...hope i could help...by the way the filters cheap too...about 10 bucks

wow, it's amazing how many people have the same problem. I have the same on my 93. I know that I have a head gasket leak, would that cause it? I was just given the car and haven't replaced much, or for that matter know what has been replaced in the past. Work in progress.

Well I've given up. Tomorrow the car goes into the dealership to be diagnosed. Hopefully they find it and its not a big waste of time and money.

Once they find it, I'll be replacing whatever is bad. I'll keep everone posted.

I was having the same problem with hesistation between 2.5k and 3k on my 92 325is. After reading this thread, I changed the o2 sensor yesterday and the hesistation is gone. I highly recommend changing the sensor if it has not been changed in the last 30k.

BMW of Bridgeport took my car in, and after a morning of looking at it, they found out my first gear synchro is bad (no shit!) and they have figured it out that the plugs are wrong! Can you believe that?!

Me either. Dealerships suck. I took my car back, and have lost all hope in finding this problem. It seems my buddy's friend is never going to get these cam locks, so I'll probably never get this damn VANOS in. Sigh...

a32- Have you considered just switching the VANOS solenoids? That could also be the problem too - maybe the solenoid fails in a way that it hesitates when it should be opening quickly. Just a thought...

It was a bad oxygen sensor. If you guys havent already, i would suggest switching out the oxygen sensor

Hope you guys solve your problems, i know how frustrating this whole thing was.

How old was your old O2? Did you have a check engine light?

i had the same exact problem with my car, and it turned out to be the gas cap.it wasn't allowing any air in, so it was straining the fuel pump, and actually ruined the fuel pump, but it runs perfect after a new cap..

    Problem solved!!!

Yes you heard right. Tonight I replaced my VANOS control unit, and the problem is GONE. It drives like a totally different car now. Throttle response is better, tons more torque right off idle, and pulls soo smooth right up to rev limit. It even sounds more aggressive under the bonnet.

The job wasn't bad at all. I ventured to do it without any specialty tools at all, and didn't have a single problem. I was extremely careful not to let anything turn, and kept my eye on the TDC marker and crank pulley.

    Halfway there

    Old vs. "New"

So next on my list is an o2 sensor. This should help milage some. Now that the car is healty, I can start modding

Now I just have to figure out why my non digital climate controls don't work

How long did it take you? I am going to have mine apart all winter and am thinking about adding that to the list.

WOW!! This is awesome! Is this an easy DIY? Any chance you could do a write up? What tools did you need? Did you follow the Pelican DIY, or something else? I'd LOVE to try this if it's not going to be too hard!

Thanks again for figuring this out!

Actually it was your post that inspired me to buy a unit, and install it.

The install wasn't hard at all, just more intiminating (sp?) than anything else. I didn't use any special tools but I had to be very careful not to lose timing.

I have to run now but can make a quick writeup later. Hope this helps!
