Where is the Oil filter on an E46 318i (Sedan) 2002 Model???
Guessing it's an N42 engine. Never seen one in the US, but every BMW i've seen has the oil filter right on "top" of the engine. Open the hood and look for a round cap sitting almost vertical.
Here's a diagram of it. The cap in the upper right corner is what you're looking for.

Edit: This is much better. The filter cap is located almost smack in the middle of the engine drawing.

It looks just like the type of filter cap on my M44 engine. It requires a special tool to get it off. I bought a plastic one from a local parts store for about $10 USD, it stripped after a few oil changes. But, I just bought a metal one from a Mercedes dealer for $15 USD and it fits much better. (I guess you could do it without the tool)

Thanks,
It looks a fair bit different than the oil filter housings on several E46 writeups - probably because those writeups were for 6-cylinder cars.
