My 3rd brake light illuminates but not as bright as when I'm stepping on the brakes about a few minutes after shutting off engine.
Basically the light comes on when the car goes to sleep.
Once I do something to wake the car up(unlocking door, pressing hatch release or turning the car on) the light goes OFF.
This is the BMW x5 E70.
Has anyone seen or heard of this problem? Anyway to fix it?

Is your key really loose in the ignition switch?

If the light is dimmer than usual my guess is another item is drawing current THROUGH the light, a path to ground creating a series circuit of the effected items(stop light and ?). I'm not familiar with X5s but am guessing that the light is mounted on the tailgate. The wire loom to the gate may have frayed or broken wires that are touching. Find the spot the loom bends most and unravel to coverings to inspect the wires.
