HELP.....Can someone tell me if a starter for a US 1979 633 will fit for my 1979 euro 635? If not what starter will work? I bet the walking, talking, breathing BMW book of knowledge, the most famous of them.....George, you will know.
Did you compare part #'s on realoem.com?
guys are using the Bosch starter from an 92-95 530. they are smaller and easier to install and have a good bit more power

To answer the question: yes. And as mentioned; you have options.
The starter Bert is referring to is the Bosch SR441X.
I installed one into my car about 4 years ago and have been very happy with it. You can see in the attached pic how much smaller it is than the stock one.

Did the same update on 2 of my Alfa's, and those starters look just like the Alfa ones, too. The later/smaller starters have a reduction drive built into the nose, and are both lighter and more powerful. IIRC, it's 1.2 hp versus 0.7. Almost 10 years with no reliability issues.
I got mine in 2009 for USD 75.00 + shipping and didn't have to return the core. It was a rebuild though just like this one from Autohausz AZ.
Prices have certainly gone up !

Randall,
If we do a little research on RealOEM we can see the following:
'85 North American spec 635 (my car):
Exchange Starter Motor: P/N 12411272150
Starter Motor: P/N 12411466093
'84 M635
Exchange Starter Motor: P/N 12411272150
Starter Motor: P/N 12411720635
So, since it has been proven that the SR441X fits in my 635 and since the M635 and my car share the same Exchange Starter Motor (whatever that means) P/N then I believe that the SR441X will be compatible with your car. I know that Lee Highsmith demo'ed at a Sharkfest the installation of a starter that I think was the SR441X (I wasn't there) into an M car so maybe he or another M owner can pipe in with counsel.
Thanks guys. My starter seems fine but I will file this info in my folder of useful tidbits for future use if needed, hopefully not.
