So, I can't seem to figure this out... Is Imola Red slightly deeper than a traditional "bright" red? Has anyone seen the two different "reds" that were available in person? I've seen some pictures online but given differences in computer monitors, I don't trust that. If it matters, I'm considering an M3 from the '05-'06 model year - just in case the color has changed over the years.
Its a medium tone of a bright shade of red. Its darker than Hellrot but not by any means a dark red.

Perfect. Thank you. I'm glad I asked - with some of the pictures I saw online, I thought it was going to be just a shade or two darker (not much, though). But that is still pretty bright. I like it, but I'm afraid the cops will, too! Not that I drive unsafely, but you always hear about "5 cars driving down the road and it's the bright red one that gets pulled over".
FWIW there is absolutely zero proof substantiating the idea that red cars get pulled over more than any other color of car

Imola is my favorite red
Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by hundreds of engineers that get paid thousands of dollars for something you bought at Pep Boys because your buddy who doesn't have a job told you it was 'better'?!?
Imola is a great color. Very deep and sophisticated, while still being a 'real' red. Not much white in the color mix.
As for being pulled over... I know what you mean. Whether it's true or not, I personally don't like driving cars that are brightly colored. I love looking at them, but just feel vulnerable while behind the wheel.
Imola is a stunning color, I wish both my e38 and e39 where Imola.
I do kind of which BWM had made a metallic version of it though, I bet it would be on a whole different level of amazing.
Current fleet:
1999 BMW e36 M3
1999 BMW e36 328is with rotary valve engine head
1999 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight
1990 Jeep Comanche Eliminator
1962 Austin Healey Sprite
So what is the difference between this and the Melbourne Red. Seem the same to me.
Sometimes i think the only differences between subtly different shades of color is how much people post about them and are willing to trade for the "individuality or rarity.

They are extremely similar, and the reason for that is because BMW replaced Imola Red in it's lineup with Melbourne Red. In some pictures Imola looks darker than Melbourne, in other pictures its vice versa, so I'm not sure exactly which is lighter or darker. Most people who have seen them in person report Melbourne is a shade or so lighter/brighter. Apparently Melbourne will also varies more in different lighting
