1972 2002 tachometer

My tachometer doesn't work on my 72 roundie. I bought the repair manual for the car, but it didn't mention the tachometer. Is the sending unit located at the rear of the engine near the distributor? There is a unit back there that is not wired to anything, so I suspect that's it. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe the tach attaches to the coil not the distributor.

That being said, if its hooked up and you have an aftermarket ignition box (MSD, Crane etc.) you may need an adaptor to make it work.
