I don't think the markup is on the side of BMW. Rather your government.

Believe it or not, Cuba is worse. 15kUSD for a 1997 528i. That's about 5-6x US prices vs. an extrapolated @4x US prices for those X5's (both X5 models you posted are not available in the US to my knowledge.) http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2014/...-law-kicks-in/ The original article I read had more info but that's what I can find.

Many countries commonly provide an import duty (tax) on imported vehicles (and other items!) that compete with local (country wide) production of vehicles and other items. It is simply a matter of economics...that is...discourage imported items (like cars) that CLEARLY compete with local companies.... or are clearly superior to cars produced locally (again...country wide). Every country wants to be basically productive and self-sufficient. Sometimes...actually frequently...this means a high duty on imported items.

    Australia is very bad, a new 528i is 105kUSD, m3 is 170kUSD

    An E46 m3 is 30-45k

    +1

My coworker has an Austrian exchange student. Said cars, all cars, are considered a luxury item and taxed at 30+%, on top of 20% VAT.

It is actually more on the side of BMW in Australia.

Take the 528i, 50k in the US, 105k in aus.

    Approximately:

    GST: 10,500
    Luxury Car Tax: 13500
    Stamp Duty: 1770

    Total: 25770 in tax

    105- 25770
    79230 before any tax

BMW pockets an extra 30k or so.

    These calculations are approximate.
