    bmw 740i

    2001 740i

    just got a 2001 740i for a song and every time i start it, it blows oily smoke out exhaust but then runs fine. Is this rings or value guide seals?

    that sounds like valve guide seals.

    I would agree with this. Not an uncommon thing to hear about on e38 740s.

    Never have I heard of an issue with rings on an M62 V8 and I honestly do not know what valve guide seals are.

    From what Ive seen the crank case vent is definitely a high probability, after that was checked Id suspect valve guide seals but first off would be CCV.
