Anyone going to Monterey this month? Mecum has posted an '85 M635CSi for their August auction in Monterey. It looks very much like the car (same non-spec wheels) for sale in the spring at Wayne Carini's place in CT. I didn't save the VIN so can't be sure. It will be interesting to see if it sells and for what.

I will be in Monterey and plan to hit the Mecum Auction. Looks like it is going to run on Thursday, I will probably be out there Thursday night. Looks like there is another e24 in the auction. Great looking cars. Seem strange to see so many European cars at a Mecum Auction.
Anyone else heading out for Monterey week?

Interesting that the description says the mileage is "believed to be ...". Does the odometer not work? Was the cluster replaced? While it says the interior is original, it doesn't mention the exterior paint.
I will be very interested to see what it brings at auction. Lots of bimmerphiles in CA so it might just sell for a nice price. This would be good for other M635 owners. Anyone know what the reserve is?
I question the VIN # as mine is also a 1985, 03/85 build, and my VIN is quite a bit different. Perhaps they weren't sequential?

"S38 V6 engine" LOL. Did no one look under the hood? Pretty sure style 19's, strut brace, and possibly the steering wheel aren't "fully original" either. Great-looking car though. Wish my interior looked like that.

The VIN is not good - comes up as a motorcycle. When I saw the car on the Carini website in March, I googled the VIN posted there and came up with an old newsletter from the BMWCCA NY chapter - for sale ad from what appeared to be the original owner. As I recall, the newsletter ad was about 10-years old - provenance seemed good at that point. Either a typo on the Mecum ad or something funny. That interior appears to have new seat covers. Hard to imagine a 90k mile car with such a good driver's seat, at least from the pic on the Mecum ad. The car vanished from the Carini web page some time ago.
That car looks funny to me. Wrong steering wheel, no side skirts to go with the other body skirts, wrong wheels, and Mecom says its an original. I don't think so. Mecom to me is like the ugly sister, as a last resort, you might go out with her, but you better hold your nose.
Lets get the party started before it's my bedtime.
"Believed to be..." is probably an artifact of Federalization - the cluster is swapped to a US cluster and they probably can't prove the new one was set to reflect the mileage on the car when imported. Might also be a statement that they can't guarantee the odo gears have never failed - at 93K miles it hasn't been driven a lot... (my car has just under 100K as a 9/85 build, and I'm sure those miles accurate based on my records and long ownership).
How much was this car listed for previously??
IIRC, I though it was on Hemmings or Lemmings for $24,995? I dunno...

I think the vin is missing a zero in the last 7 digits, WBAEE310501051296 looks correct and if googled, appears to show other listings for the same car.

Good catch e24mpwr, "Believed to be 92,895". Carfax doesn't seem to believe that:

Nice car, but the car description is pitiful. I kind of expect stuff like that on a Craigslist ad for a $2K car, but a person dealing in high quality cars should be able to do better than that. They spent all that money on photography, shipping the car to Monterey, and they let some idiot write the description. Sad.

+1, would have been worth paying someone a couple hundred $$ to write an accurate description noting the good and the bad. Will be very interesting to see what happens when it rolls onto the auction block.
The inaccurate mileage is a clear indication all is not well in River City.

Yeah - I'd definitely want to hear the story about the mileage.
One of the things I like most about my car was the body of records/documentation it came with.
Mecum auctions is the last place to put an M635 !!!! IMHO ..... even worse than eBay. Automatic 40% reduction in true value

I hope it doesn't sell for some ridiculously low price. This will not help future values.

It does look pretty tidy. Mine was a jap market car had no side skirts either.
And yes totally original except for wheels steering wheel would have been better. I while like the wheels on it. The engine bay from the pic looks very tidy also.

I'm going to Monterey for the vintage racing this month woo
I will be at the "Legends of the Autobahn" on Friday with my '84 633CSi in the "Super Clean" category. We'll see if we can sell it there!
Dan M.
I'll look for you there Dan.
The M635 is supposed to run through the action tomorrow. If I'm there when it goes across the block I'll post the selling price. I think they will get decent money for it even though it's at Mecum. If it were at Mecum in Kansas City it probably wouldn't do well, but in Monterey it should do fine.
