Newbie here, please excuse me. My boyfriend is a long-time BMW owner/enthusiast with an upcoming birthday. He currently drives a 2002 e39 M5. I'd love to get him something BMW related: book, manual, tools, accessories, etc. I need suggestions (anything and everything). What would YOU want? Thank you!

Does he have the original owners manual?

I have carburetors, and I'm not afraid to use them!
There are always other fish (engines) in the sea (Craigslist)
Life is about enjoying the engine you are sitting behind.
Maybe some new kidney Grilles to update the look

The original sales brochures are always something interesting for an enthusiast owner to have. Google his car model and "brochure". Maybe a BMW club membership.
If your budget allows, a driving school is a gift any car guy will appreciate. Not some bogus thrill ride in a fast car but an actual school where skills are learned. Skip Barber or the like. These schools offer everything from a half day course to multi-day schools from which he can graduate holding a competition license.

If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue

Books are always a great gift. Memoirs Of A Hack Mechanic (LINK) is a great read, BMW Enthusiast's Companion (LINK) should be in on any bimmer lovers book shelf, Alex Roy The Driver is a must have for an E39 M5 driver, Jeremy Clarksons books are great if he's a Top Gear fan, I can go on if you need more titles.
