Hello all, I'm a soon to be BMW convert. I've been into Volvos and own a 1998 V70R. Recently I have been looking for another project because I'm ready to move away from the Volvo. Main reason is the lack of availability of a mt for the R AWD.
All that said, I am currently researching buying either an later model E30 or an E36. I really like the look of the E30s but I like the fact the E36s have a timing chain rather than a belt. What are some of the things I need to look for when making my purchase?
Also, I am a bicycle aficionado and have worked on bicycles for 20 years. If you need any advice on that front, hit me up.

Welcome to the world of BMW!
That looks like a built up Volvo wagon there. Are there any performance mods?
If you don't mind me asking, what is your price range? If we know that we can help point you towards what e30 and e36 models are within your budget.
Current fleet:
1999 BMW e36 M3
1999 BMW e36 328is with rotary valve engine head
1999 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight
1990 Jeep Comanche Eliminator
1962 Austin Healey Sprite
The Volvo just has a CAI and an ECU tune with a bigger turbo. Pushing about 16lbs of boost atm.
As far as budget goes, it really depends on the car. I'm willing to more to get more but, I would also be willing to dive in and do the work to get one back to a stage 0.
Basically, I want to find a good, clean straight bodied car. If the car has had the work done and documented, I will splurge. Right now, my budget is 4-7k.
I just located a 84 e30 with a fresh rebuild on the m10. The body is straight and has a little rust on the driver side rocker panel. Asking 3k.

I've also located a complete s50 engine and tranny for $2g. 140,000 miles. What do you guys think? I believe I could get the car for $2300.
I'd buy the cheapest straight body E36 you can and then go from there
