I guess we shouldn't show the OP the e36 M3s that are in the 10k range . . . . . that might send him overboard.
Here's what you have to do with these cars. Find the exact car you want. Say in your case it's a 330i. Go find 3 different cars at 6, 8, and 10k. Look at each one and the maintenance that's been done. (If someone else paid for it, you won't have to later!) If you can't justify a few thousand to get the nicer car that will be cheaper and better long term you might be better off finding another brand.
My old E36 M3 with 150K on the clock and a rebuilt title got me 10,500.00 That would drive him over the edge.

In all honesty I've been buying cars via private party for the last 15 years and never felt the market was delusional. Some people yes but I've always been able to buy good cars at better than dealer prices, which is the only reason to do it. If you've never been successful it might be because you are too low in your offering prices , or every single person youve met is delusional. Which possibility seems more likely?

OP, how old are you, exactly? me thinks you have very little experience IRL. If you don't believe us get an auction license from your uncle and see what $4 point 4 k gets you. (Who says $4.4k anyways?)

Deals can be had for sure. I buy a new (to me) used car every few months it seems (I have a problem I know) and searching craigslist is a hobby of mine. I see cars all the time I want, some are priced well and others are pretty high. When I see a car that is priced high I know it is a matter of time before I see it posted every few days, then it starts getting posted with a lower price than the time before. The market dictates what sellers can get for their cars. Some people obviously act like because it has a roundel or a three-pointed star on the hood that they can ask wayyyyy more than they should, those people never sell their cars.
A friend of mine just sold am e36 328i that was clean enough (but not perfect) for $6k. It was modded and imo most mods decrease value but he was in a "want to sell" situation to see if he could get his asking price. Most people responded with lower offers and told him his price was too high. Then one day a kid came and looked it over and handed him $6k. I don't think most people would have paid $6000 for that car but one guy thought it was worth it and that's all that matters. All it takes is one person willing and able to pay.

Seems me and you are similar in that regard... I've had to delete all my CL searches from my bookmarks bar to prevent me from doing this right now (since I currently have more BMWs than parking space at my house) but I would always scour the internet and look for deals, and just pick em up if I wanted the car. Sell it a few months later for what I paid or more... usually I got deals by people looking for quick cash (I always assume they want to start dealing drugs LOL) but I love the ads that start at $6000, next week are $5950, then $5935, then $5900... then they realize they are dumb and the car is pulled off CL and a month later its for sale for $3000

Jeez...I must be a Saint!
I have my 01' 330Ci w/165 all-true hiway miles set aside for my brother for $1850.
I'm selling because I need a car with 32+ MPG, not 23 mpg. hell I have a 71 mile round trip daily commute.
I'm hoping he backs out now so I can get more!
OP go get your dealer and wholesale license then you can buy all the 4.4k cars you want.
I think the big issue is the nice ones do command a higher price. You know, ones with all service records, one owner, no accidents, no rust, etc. Lots of people don't mind paying that price. The problem is everyone else jumps on the price bandwagon without any of the aforementioned stuff.
You get lots of people that say "nothing needed." It is a flat out lie in most cases that I've run across. Dealers and private sellers aren't much different in that respect. Some guys know what they are doing when they advertise, and some don't. It sucks for guys that live in rust belt states that want a nice rust free (or mostly rust free) car, because you have to travel to get it and typically buy sight unseen.
What ends up happening more often than not, is someone overpays for a car. They get it home and realize it needs at least $2-4k in maintenance or repairs. They don't do most of it and just the bare minimum to get by. Then the car is back up for sale in 6 months at or near the same price they paid.
BUT, they are worth what someone will pay. Right, except the expectation is that they are getting what they paid for and 99% of the time, most people aren't. Most people don't want to admit they horribly overpaid for a car. I have, twice. It's a shitty feel bro.
Yep, its broken....
