I was told that run flat tires on the X5 can not be patched and a blown out tire more easily damages the rim. So tire and wheel insurance is a must. True?
FWIW, I had T/W warranty thru the dealer on our E90 and it paid for itself after 3 of the 5 tires were replaced by them - BMW will replace any run flat instead of patching it b/c it's a liability regardless of which model. Just picked up a used X5 and tacked on the T/W warranty again...
Never had a blowout though, only punctures. I assume a blowout will need to be replace no matter what - but from my wife driving the E90 until the threads were showing badly the tire never came apart so I'm assuming they hold up pretty well (factory Potenza RE050).
Just an FYI...at this point in time...there are 3 different generations of "X5"s...from 2000-2014...the e53 (2000-06), e70 (2007-13, and now f15 (2014-up) X5. If you don't list your model/model year/build date...or use the E or F nomenclature to identify which generation of X5 you own...it can be difficult answering your questions.
Please help us to help you better by creating a signature that includes your model/model year/build date...this way, your vehicles info is always available if needed to answer your questions or make suggestions...it also helps others that may be using the search feature and run across one of your posts. They'll know if the information in your post applies to the X5 they own.
