Speedometer not working, ABS light on, seems from the threads that the ABS Control module or unit may need replacing,
Can someone point for sure as to where its located? Seems there may be more than one location possible,
99 528,
thx,

Standing in front of the car looking toward the rear, the ABS module is just to the right of the round 20 pin OBDII connector in the engine compartment. It looks just like the picture edjack posted.
The 97 & 98 528 cars have the module above the glove box inside the car. It doesn't get damaged by engine heat in that location.

No, it's actually on the right side of the car.

PLEASE get it diagnosed first. I have seen COUNTLESS people come to me for help with their trifecta lights ask me "Do you know anwhere good to rebuild the module/buy a replacement?" my first question is always "Did you get it diagnosed, or did you diagnose it yourself." "Oh I read online and..."
plugs in computer
reads codes
Wheel speed sensor is bad, module is fine. "Oh gee thanks" - I have started to see more speed sensor failures then module failures recently, notably a few times the plastic clip to hold the sensor on dried out and cracked, leaving the wire to hang, and eventually get sandblasted away from road dirt or snagged on something and ripped.
But yes RJLupin that is where the module is, with the "medusa" brake lines coming out of it.

No speed...? its a rear wheel speed sensor... I cant remember... I want to say right but im going off memory. Not to say your abs module doesnt need attention but your speedo doesnt care about abs
Not sure if any of you see this but I pulled an ABS from the junkyard today, installed it and no dice, still have:
No speedo
No mileage being counted
ABS warning light
check engine light on
Could it be something else like a relay?
When I put it in, I left one of the leads at the back loose, went to drive and NO BRAKES! a bit scary, seemed to leak some liquid, is that brake fluid? Anyway, tightened it up and brakes work but not as good as before.
Any help welcome,
Dude! You pulled the whole hydraulic setup? Now you'll need to bleed the whole system.
All you needed was the black box portion if anything. Six small torx screws and a simple harness connector.
But you also never mentioned checking wheel sensors or wiring (which gets brittle and breaks). This should have been step #1.
Yep, that's the fun of the junkyard, maybe you can enlighten me on bleeding the system? Everyone says wheel sensors and I'll check them but how could they stop mileage being counted too?
thx for the advice,
Like I said it is most likely wheel speed sensor... no speedometer usually indicates speed sensor not ABS module. One needs to look at ALL the symptoms they have to deduce what issue their car has
Wheel speed sensors are the ONLY thing telling the car how fast the wheels are moving, how else would the car count mileage?
I also got to agree with south42, dont think you should be working on the car. Tons of local enthusiasts out there and reputable shops who can help you.

If you need to have your ABS module repaired, I just had a very good experience with a repaired ABS module from "Automotive Scientific Inc". They operate on eBay under the name "Global Solutions" and have an eBay user name of "ate1234".
I initially had DSC caution light and yellow ABS and Brake Lights illuminated. Took the car to local BMW dealership where they told me they wanted $1600 to replace my ABS Module. I laughed and told them I'd look elsewhere. They told me the speed sensors checked out okay, so at least I didn't have to trouble them any further. I removed my ABS module and sent it to Automotive Scientific and got it back within 10 days. The total cost was buying the repair service for $91 plus I paid about $18 to mail them my faulty part. After reinstalling the module, all three lights are now out, and all the missing functions have returned to full use (speedometer, odometer, cruise control, ABS, DSC). So it appears they indeed fixed my problem.

Hope this helps anyone with similar problems. I'm also willing to help with step by step instructions for removing/reinstalling the ABS module. (It's dead easy--If I can do it, anyone can.)
