So i got a 01 530i the battery was dead so I replaced it.Still nothing I got power to everything.
windows, lights ect......wont make a noise when I try to start it. The starter has power the motor is not seized I can turn it buy the crank.
so i changed
ignition
ews
ecu all off of 03 530i still nothing.
i checked all the fuses and everything seems to be right
guys I relay need some help on this one what can I check or test or change everything works but it just wont start???????
Starter is busted, or dead alternator. Btw it's not an m sport it's just a sport.
Check your spark plugs? Could be a fuel related issue as well
Have you tested your battery?
check the battery again and if the battery is good it might be the starter if its just clicking.
Our cars will do funky things when the battery starts to go so I would try there first.
I'm confused, can you explain what your wrote?
You can turn it by the crank? What crank?
Your car is an 01, so if you put and 03 EWS and DME in your 01 were they programmed for your VIN and key?

The starter has power the motor is not seized I can turn it buy the crank.
so i changed.
ignition
ews
ecu all off of 03 530i still nothing.

Try another starter. You said it has power and the motor is not seized. Sound like the starter wasn't working.

EWS is likely the culprit. Was everything recoded properly after you changed the EWS/ECU?

If you want to know for sure and don't want to code or mess with it anymore, take the two large black wires going to the EWS box under the dash, cut them and splice them together and see if it starts. I had to do that when I ditched my ECU for the LSx swap.
is it auto or manual? My 01 5401/6 did this and it was the switch on the clutch - if its not depressed completely it won't start (I had a friend with computer that could read how far the signal was going - EWS was fine but bad switch at clutch made the DME say no start) - my switch was bad. If auto, make sure it is in park all the way - could be nuetral/safety switch. You said new battery - I would also recheck the connections.

Have you tried another key? Sometimes our keys get weird and need to be reprogrammed. I have one key that works Sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.

Thanks to everyone for your replies I did switch the starters still nothing I jumped the EWS from the two thick black cables and the car started to crank does this mean my EWS is bad??? I have another EWS would I need to have it reprogrammed ??
Bump
Connect a laptop to the OBD port and diagnose with PASoft.
Then query/diagnose each modules for errors.
This is how I checked if my car has any issue.
Do you have the key from the 2003 530i?
See the attached pdf describing EWS operation. Your 2001 will have EWS 3 (3.3), or perhaps 3.x, if further revisions were issued after this document was written (it's too bad that it isn't dated)
Start reading from page 19 for a description of the very specific module limitations as well as programming &/or coding requirements (using BMW specific diagnostic software) to enable to cranking and and then provide spark and fuel in order to start the engine.
Pages 20 & 21 describe starting sequence. Depending on the EWS and key being used you may be able to crank the engine but the DME will withhold spark and fuel. EWS &/or DME module replacement described on page 22 indicates there is no chance that the engine will start after replacing the DME with one from another car since the rolling code table cannot be updated to match the EWS. Similarly, unless the replacement EWS module was ordered new from the dealer for your VIN, the engine will not start.
I've read of companies that claim to be able to re-write modules to any VIN &/or match rolling code tables, but BMW dealer software cannot do this on "used" modules.
I suspect your best option is to re-install the original EWS and DME, realign them with DIS or equivalent so the rolling code tables in each are set back to entry #1 and then proceed with diagnosis for the no start condition.
I.e. key transponder, ring antenna, wiring &/or connector breaks or shorts, module DTC, etc. etc.

Yes I do have the key off of the 03 530i And thanks guys I'm gonna start reading up on this
Are you putting the 03 key in the 01 key antenna ring. I have had success swapping in dme, ews, and keys without requiring coding on e46 e39 and e53.
So I swap the ring and still nothing but once agen if I jump the EWS it will crank ????
