Stumbled upon this while browsing the Range Rover forums. Apparently Land Rover toyed with the idea of stuffing an M70 v12 into the Range Rover line up. That would have been KILLER!

I want a P38 Range Rover down the line....may just do an m70 conversion on it .

Looks like an M73... Indeed cool though. Does anyone make a V12 SUV?
I know that Range Rover had the M62 for a while (2003 IIRC). The Lamborghini LM002 had a choice of 2 V12 (5.1L and 7.2L). The Lamborghini Urus concept had a 5.2L V10. Also I think the Audi Q7 offered a W12

Q7 looks like a minivan! Those like 600 hp benz amg minvans always make me laugh...
Surely you both mean V12 TDI (diesel), not a W12 petrol?

It is a little odd it didnt get the W12 though as the Touareg did:

I did not differentiate between petrol or Diesel.
Although quite rare, BMW built several X5 LMs...This is an E53 X5 with an S70/2 engine (McLaren F1 engine based from the E31 M8 motor)

OK....buy that X5, replace the engine with an M62, sell it as a X5, replace the 850 M70 with that engine.
That wasn't a production car was it? If so, I bet everyone would want that engine in their 8!
that is the motor the CSI should have had and the 850 should have been fitted with the csi motor standard or at least an option
but no the fit it with an under powered V12 which reallyis very little different to the V8 that was sold alongside of it
really why still 2 engine options which are essentially the same, well very little difference between them if you look at it objectively
Well to me it seems a pretty dumb marketing decision
Very true. The original v12 had what, 14 more hp than the v8? There was like a 20k price difference though if I remember correctly. I think this is the reason they quoted the M62 having the exact same HP as the M60. Still, I'm going through the hassle of selling my 840 to get an 850... I will gain 40 HP or so but even more than that I have been intoxicated by the V12s charm. I think V12s get romanticized so much. I bet half of the people that buy V12 7 series and S classes do it so they can have the king of engines more than they do it for the HP. Just something intrinsically very special about a V12... might not make sense but... its a V12! Oh and that sound...

V12 rangerover, really a cool idea, but that X5, OMG, that's what dreams are made of , mountains of power and a 6speed in an SUV... god god, wouldn't a pair of 6speed V12s look good together... I need one now
One of the problems here in Canada is that the cost of Diesel is the same as premium gasoline.
wow that engine looks amazing! Look at the size of those valve covers! And those VANOS pumps in the front.

Are the X5's AWD? I was thinking of the v12 and manual trans from the 8...but we dont have AWD so the trans would have to be adapted from something else. I Could be wrong but I don't think any of the X5's came with manual trans did they?

I would think that the m70 and other BMW 12s might not be a good fit. Don't they need a lot of additional cooling at slow speeds? Most of the 4wheeling is done at slow speeds and medium revs. Plus, the oil system should be designed to accommodate large inclinations to prevent oil starvation.
Although more costly, having a familiar platform (M70) on a Range Rover would offer parts compatibility between the 8 and the Rover.
My next vehicle is almost certainly going to be a 93-95 era Range Rover County LWB.
Guess what else? The transmission is a ZF4HP22/4 Same as the 4-speed 8s!
Gorgeous!
