    5HP24 Valve body rebuild

Rebuilt valve body from the 5HP24 in my '97 840Ci last weekend. Preventive maintenance on the main pressure valve issue at 224,000miles.

Excellent write-up on this for a 7 Series in a recent post on the e38 board, post # 30 and post #109.

    http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d-Thread/page5

Also a number of good post on the Jag, Land Rover and X5 boards.

No issues in performance and did this as preventive maintenance to replace the main pressure valve to the ZF up-graded piston and casting that contains the main pressure valve.

With all the extensive documentation on the web, just a couple notes.

The documentation that comes with the 5HP24 rebuild kit gives no information relating the spring selection for the e31 specific 5HP24. PDF attached.
The 5HP24 Spare parts catalog found at this link

    http://www.bimmerboard.com/members/ibew595/5HP24.pdf

shows the e31 5HP24 is ZF #005, as shown below. This document also clearly indicates the spring selection for the e31 5HP24.

It is odd that the kit documentation does not list the 005 trans on the first page under applications, although the ZF distributor indicated that this was the only kit available. The kit does contain all the correct parts for this application.

At the bottom of the kit part table in the Zf documentation, footnotes indicate specific springs to use for certain VB types.

The VB that I removed is numbered 318 shown below, which is not listed. With the kit documentation, there is no way of knowing which springs and O-ring to use when there are multiple choices.

The image below shows the three springs that are included in the kit for spring location 55.150. Designated A, B, and C with different part numbers.

For example the Spare Parts document shows that the e31 005 trans uses 667 for location 55.150.

There are five spring positions and one O-ring position that have multiple choices. The positions and correct part number for the e31 are:

    Valve Housing (Housing #1):

    Compression Spring: 50.040 - 0732 042 504

    Compression Spring: 50.128 - 0732 042 523

    Valve Housing (Housing #2):

    Compression Spring: 51.030 - 0732 041 547

    O-Ring: 51.260/010 - 0734 313 220 (green)

    Valve Housing (Housing #3):

    Compression Spring: 55:030 - 0732 041 894

    Compression Spring: 55.150 - 0732 041 667

Really surprised that if you purchased the kit alone, you would have no way of knowing the springs to use. For the O-ring, one is green and one is black. The green one is used.

Somewhat of a pain to get the electrical plug off the transmission. A tab that is on the lock ring connector can be used to untwist the connector using a 90 degree cotter pin remover.

I also changed out the VB casting shown on the left that contains the main pressure valve and shift selector valve. The kit comes with the up-graded main pressure valve piston, but not the selector valve piston.

I believe failure prone valve body casting is common with the 5HP30.

Worked on one VB casting at a time to help not mix up the 30 plus springs. Some springs did appear to be slightly compressed.

The one check ball. The color code for the orifice disks was changed.

Duct plate with both lower VB castings removed. Single gasket used under this plate.

Other than the main pressure valve piston, this check valve spring seems to be the only change. New check valve on the left. The plastic tip was worn down some.

Up-graded main pressure valve piston with lengthened lands on right. Told by folks at Eriksson that this was changed to lessen wear of the bore that causes pressure spikes that lead to drum failure.

As far as I could tell, very little bore wear at this point.
