Updating 97 540 overheated engine from a month ago. lots of pics

Here's the old post that I started.
    http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...hat-overheated

Yesterday dholland17 and I were back at it. Too early for beers, but the tunes were playing.
The engine was already out of the car so we had to improvise on how to get the Jesus bolt out.
Man, that sucker was tight, bent the 3/4" stainless handle on my crank holder about 30 degrees before the bolt broke loose.
The chain guide looked pretty good, only minor ware and no parts in the sump.
The lower end looked good too.
What didn't look good were 2 cylinders and 2 pistons, too much heat. The rings scored the walls. One cylinder was pretty bad.
So the block is toast unless it's sleeved and 2 pistons are toast. Not a lot of meat between the cylinders so it's probably not worth fixing.
Most of the oil control rings were pretty carboned up, they were stuck on 2 on the pistons.

Who said the V8 is a much heavier engine than the I6?

Damn shame the bores got scored. One the bright side, it will likely make a nice planter for the misses garden!!

Looks like a good day of drinking and some wrenching to fill the gaps. Not all bad.
Any plans for the remnants of that motor?

That block looks pretty light weight. I only remember the old cast iron GM blocks that were a bear to lug around and heave in/out of my trunk back in the hot rod days.

Yeah M62 is much lighter than M52 iron block. I have both laying around and M62 weighs around 80lbs while M52 is tad over 105 lbs

Note the 4-bolt main bearing caps: Old hot-rod technology.

Did you also notice the oil squirters that cool the bottom of the pistons? Not really old technology, wonder how many companies used them 16 years ago?

Philly, the plan was to rebuild it until we saw the cylinder walls.
Can't think of too many wife's that would want it as a planter. (it wouldn't rust, that's a plus)
It would make a good coffee table base for someone that had a big man cave.

Missed 'em. Cute. However, diesel engines have used the squirters for decades or more, so it's nothing new.

The coffee table idea is a good one. Many years ago, the local dealer had such a round glass top mounted on top of a bare 4 liter (4.4?) V8 block.

No, he bought it knowing it had a bad engine.
He also bought a 98 engine that is in and running.

But but but but.... that engine is snake-oil clean on the inside. It couldn't have possibly failed!!

It's a shame since the engine is clean inside. You have to wonder if the "dumb" temp gauge played a role. By time somebody who was driving got the warning message, he or she may have driven just enough longer to ruin the engine. At least you had fun day and probably learned some tricks that may come in handy one of these days.
