I would post this in the wheel and tires section, but there is little to non traffic in that subforum. I figured some of you guys are interested in how this is done. If mods feel that this is inappropriate, just tow it to another section then.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I take no responsibility for what you do to your own wheels. This can seriously harm people around you, if a wheel fails.
So back story. I've always been a fan of the styling 29's centers, one of those features that drew me in, is that they only have 20bolts to hold them together, and how those bolt holes end at each spoke, awesome detail in my opinion. tho I never liked the small lip, or the shape of it. I had been thinking about how to convert them for a long time, tho lack of money put a stopper to it. I could not afford new barrels and lips. But then i saw a build thread on here, can't remember the name. But this chap in England converted his set too three piece, and reused the old barrels.
So i thought why not give it a shot, the plan here is to get them fitted on an E28. The main thing is that they will not clear the front struts without spacers. And we all know what is added in spacers is lost in lip size. So I'll have to do something about that as well.
So the too do list is.
-Cut of old lips.
-Reuse barrels, But I'll have to cut them up, to get them narrower.
-Order four new lips from Germany.
-Polish the Hexagon cap.
-Get new BBS emblems, (Getting them shipped from Paul, the man behind Ehrlich wheelworks).
-Glass blast them.
-Paint them, unsure of color at the moment, any input is welcome. They will go on an Burgundy red E28.
I picked the wheels up in Denmark, had them Shipped to me. Here is a picture of them when i got them.
So Lathe-time, the way i set them up was by using a 20mm spacer. First i centered the spacer in the Lathe.
Then I bolted up the wheel.
Started cutting, the first wheel.
Then for the second wheel, i used "don't know what you guys call it, but we call it a (stingari), guess that is a Stinger" it work out much faster.
Success kid, lip is off. After i had them cut of, i went over the surface with the regular cutter.
A picture of them disassembled, two waiting patiently for there turn to get the lips off.
Then i haaaaaaaad to do the obligatory Barrel + Barrel shot. The lips that i will order are gonna be around 3.5 or 3.75" lips all around.
And a few of them mounted to the front of the car. Progress will not be so fast, Since I work over in the oil business in Norway and am gone four weeks, then I'm home for four weeks.
Crazy amount of poke, the lips that i will use will be half the size of these.
And with the centercap mounted.
I'll post more as progress goes, hope you guys enjoy.

nice work, can wait to see how this goes. and the that lathe is awesome.
Thanks man
Custom made. got mine out of UK. Image-wheels did them
Thanks man Yeah, I'm lucky that i could borrow it.
After getting some money together, i finally sent a order to Image-wheels in UK and ordered some lips. They were very swift with the manufacturing and postage, would recommend to a friend.
Alright after two weeks i got a package.
First ting was making sure they fitted onto the faces. And they did, so happy i took the right measurements. :Alright
And of course they had to be thrown on the car. The don't clear the fenders tho its only about 2-3mm and i think I'll rework them some more before paint.
I drilled a hole in the lip and placed a nut and screw, since i ordered them without holes. Because i was afraid i would fuck up the measurements, and thought I would just do it my self.
Ended up drilling four holes by hand, and securing the face to the rim so it would not move around when i took it to the stationary drill. I'm using M8x35 grade A4-70 button head socket screws.
Drilling all the other holes.
One wheel fully bolted up and fitted with a 245/35 tire. The Wheel is 17x10.6 I know weird spec. But oh well. The faces still need to get on the lathe for one last time, to get a recess made for the rear barrel.
Test fitted on the car. I really like it, the tire clears fine, just need the lip to clear as well.
And anoher one, the front tire is not mounted at all, it is just on the wheel. Not beaded.
Ill get more photos up when the faces have been machined and painted. Also started using instagram, you can find me @jdjurhuus if you are interested

Man, those look great. Nice impressive work!
Holy sh!t, they look awesome!!!
Great work so far, those are gunna look amazing once the faces are refinished.
I went through a similar process converting my SSR wheels from 2 to 3 piece (I had a Wheelflip do the work though), the rears now have 4" lips and look so much better than before.
Yup! You nailed it on these. They look awesome and like stated before, with refinished faces they'll be even more amazing.
The skills that guys in the North Atlantic ocean.. have..................... just awesome
this looks fantastic

Excellent effort so far, I have no doubt these will look the part when they're all buttoned up!
Do you have any preliminary calculations on what the offsets should be? Also, what is the barrel width after cutting?
A+ thread. Haven't seen anything this good on bf.c in a while.
I just got access to a manual 3axis cnc/lathe and I need some ideas for projects.
Awesome thread, subscribed to see these beauties finished up!
Thanks guys! loving it as well. I have been wanting to do this for a long time. I just takes money to get the ball rolling.
Thanks man, yeah converting wheels from 2 to 3 piece ain't that difficult. All that is needed is access to a lathe, all of the work I've done is really basic.
Thanks dudes I'm looking forward to paint them!
I don't really know to be honest, and my measurement of 10.6" might as well be whack since i just took a ruler against it, and not a really good measurement. I'll calculate the offset when I'm finished milling the faces, they still need a recess on the back side for the barrel to sit on. Since I'm gonna sandwich mount them.
Haha, thanks dude, means a lot! Yeah get some other cool wheels out!
Sounds awesome, hope i wont disappoint you.
Here is a picture, that did not really capture the color and makes it look like it's painted.
This is the color of it. (poorly sandblasted) Undecided what paint i shall use on it. Gold, Bright silver and gun metal is the three paints i think I'll use.
Gunmetal with black bolts
wow...very nice!!!
just bought a set of 29's for my e36...awesome wheels made ever more awesome in this thread
^^
if you have noticed this notice you will have noticed that this notice is not worth noticing
They are awesome
Wurth silver will give them a very nice OEM+ look, Nogaro silver would be a bit edgy. I don't think you should paint them gold.
OMFG mind blown!
Incredible work. You're making it look easy.
