bmw = sports
benz = im a rich mofo cracka!
depends on the model I believe;
3 series > C-class
5 series > E-class (till this year)
5 series < E-class ('04 and after)
7 series < S-class
Z4 > SLK
Z8 < SL

I think it is a joke that people always say BMW is performance, Mercedes is luxury...
BMW provides a wide variety of car choices, such as the M3 for ultimate performance at an affordable price, or the 760 for ultimate luxury with a very respectable amount of performance. BMW also offers manual trannies in more vehicles in their model line than any other auto manufacturer, Mercedes offers none. BMW offers SMG, Mercedes offers none. BMW has iDrive, Mercedes has a clusterfuck of buttons all over the console that give me a headache. The M3 always smokes the C-Class AMG cars, the M5 always smokes the E-Class AMG cars, and the S55 AMG is just a waste of money.
IMO, Mercedes is for people who need a penis extention and choose to drive a car with dwidling quality just because the emblem on the hood makes them feel better about themselves. Mercedes are overpriced boats that handle poorly and they all look the same to me (the 7 series ARS gives the 7 30% more tortional rigidity than the S Class). In fact many of the new Mercedes somewhat resemble Hondas to me, and you can't distinguish much between the Mercedes model line.
The technology and luxury in the 7 series far exceeds the S Class IMO, and it would run circles around the Mercedes at the track any day with equal drivers in each car.
As far as performance goes, I think that Mercedes should bag their high performance cars alltogether, because they always fall short to BMW and Audi. How can you consider a car to be a sports car but not offer a manual transmission?
I'm sorry but I am just sick of seing people park their damn S Classes wherever they want because they feel that they are more important than everyone else.

through the sedan range, BMW throttles MB, when it comes to two-doors and/or luxo-roadsters, MB takes the cake, the Z4 and SLK are a wash, but the CLK, CL, and SL are light-years beyond anything the bavarians have to offer (new) from a prestige and aesthetics standpoint.
also Rolls is head-and-shoulders above Maybach in any measure outside of power.

Every MB owner I know is this exact same way.
Not to defend the Mercs, but I have to admit that from a looks point of view they do have a few good designs (CLK, SLK, etc.) but alas, they are sorely lacking in the engine department (compare engine displacement to HP and MB always come out second and they compensate by S/C) and the interior quality in the C class is atrocious

BMW= poor mans Mercedes
there two different companys with two differnt types of reputations to hold up to....look at the new 5-Series and look at the new E-class....the E-Class is a hell of a lot more comforting and elegant looking...and whoever said a Mercedes handles like shit must be drunk....
Mercedes is old people rich, bmw is yuppie young person rich
In the public eye?
Mercedes = old money, prestige, etc..

I haven't bothered to read all the posts, but it's a pretty simple answer. It depends where you live. Mercedes makes so many cars that don't make it to the States, it's not even funny. A-class, Vaneo, Smart, and a ton of small engined C-class. There's really no prestige in rolling around in a Mercedes van. Plus I take a Mercedes public bus everyday. Then again, it's not much of a challenge to buy a 316ti either. Neither of them are prestigous.
Ultimate performance? Hardly. A 20k Neon can give it a hard time in a straight line, a 30k Evo/STI even harder all around, and an equally priced Z06 will destroy it. I honestly think people see BMW and Mercedes both as Luxury brands, it's just BMW/Mercedes Enthusiasts look further into it.such as the M3 for ultimate performance at an affordable price
come one, has anyone every driven the E & S class Mercedes. Compared to a BMW, there's no road feel; that "oneness with the road" feeling you get with driving a BMW..............no comparison for a true driving enthusiast.
BMW is a poor man's Mercedes.......total bullshit.

I realize that perception is different than reality.
w/o reading the rest of the thread I'm sure I'm with the majority

I vote Porsche. But since that isn't an option: Mercedes would have to be more prestigious, but BMW would be a better performance car.

There is a lot of bitterness towards Mercedes and their owners here, and there really is no reason for it, other than the fact that they are different from what most of us prefer. In the context of this thread it wreaks of jealousy (of the supposed fact that Mercedes are generally considered more prestigious, not of the cars themselves), which is a shame. I like Mercedes a lot. I used to own one, and my parents had one when I was in high school. I thought they handled very well for the street. I think they serve their purpose and I don't see the need to begrudge people who own them.
And I've seen lots of e46s with leatherette. My brother has one - you have probably seen one and didn't even know it. Sometimes I wish my car had it because Dove Grey leather is a huge pain to keep clean.

I love them both .... Last time I was in the market for one of the other I ended up with an E430.. luxury and performance... When you buy cars of this caliber, most poeple aren't looking for a tenth less in 0-60 : just a fast car with all the other perks one gets in either brand.
I agree with most.. which is BMW = SPORTY, MERCEDES = luxury. BMW does also offer luxury, of course, but unfortunately society sees Mercedes as higher caliber... NOT that that is the case... but even in resale time... The BMW depreciates slightly more than the Benz... I know, I am pricing out 96-97 E320's vs 96-97 BMW 5XX, and I can actually go up a year or two in BMW for the price of a 96-97 E320.
I disagree with those that said performance = BMW only. Please look at the specs on a MB E420, E430, E500(mid 90's), C43, or C34(forgot the designation for the one b4 C43... oh and the E55 : quite a few performance models to select from, I would say.. oh wait, more, : the CLK 430, or the S55, or anything with AMG on the back..
So in closing, you have performance if you want it in Mercedes.
I also agree, that on some older Mercedes and some not so old (mid early 90's) the interiors are outdated (that is one reason I am like the BMW's...
ANd yes a C class looks very boring on the inside when compared to a 328..
Build quality? Both are excellent built, don't think anyone can argue one way or the other... look at the door closure mechanism on either brands or even Audi or VW , they are solid pieces, or tap on the doors, the metal is solid.... unlike some other car mfgs.....
Oh and last? LOL, Mercedes are NOT just for the rich...lol $xx spent on Mercedes or BMW or Chevy is still equal to $XX... lol... can they cost more ? Yeah, but even us normal people can buy bmw or mercedes with some effort sometimes.....
(granted I hold one full time job, two part time jobs, collect unemployemnt and food stamps) but I can manage to pay my Mercedes car payment... OK KIDDING, LOL, kidding to the last sentences.. lol its friday.

I agree 100% the last generation C class looks like an F'n Honda!! No question, : but its still a Mercedes....Originally Posted by M Threesome

The best was going to the Annual new car show, and coming out with 1K's of peole parked wayyyyyy out there, and my car was up front with Ferrari's Bentley's and other Benz owners... I dont dare do that with my current ride, LOL. The benz I had wasn't even a S class, but a 00 E430 w/AMG rims.black.. definitely looked the part,.
