I need to get this fixed but all i've heard are horror stories about it taking 10hrs and costs 1,400 for a mechanic to do it. also how difficult is it to replace the drive chain>
Cheers
I don't know anyone here who has paid to have this done. You do have to remove the dash so a mechanic may stick it to you if you are going to pay to have it done. I think it took me about an hour to remove the dash the only time I did it following the DIY here. It's not that difficult just a bit time consuming. Has the fan not run since last summer? No heat over the winter? Brrrr.
Price the parts and do it yourself. Should be able to do it in a day with no problem. Maybe there is another member in your area who could help.
Cost my neighbor $1100.00 a month before I bought my 7 from them. Yikes!!Originally Posted by Thrills

E38.org save yourself a ton of money
it looks pretty overwhelming once you have it appart, just label all the wires and parts you have to remove so you know where they go when you're putting it all back together. Not a bad job if you can follow instructions. It took me about 3 hrs to complete.
When you realize how much difference there is in meaning to "taking the dash apart" to replace a W140 evaporator versus an E38 blower, the E38 seems like child's play.
This is actually really easy only took about 3 hours to complete. Just remember to get the clip for the airbags on the dash from the dealer. There is a write up somewhere. I took a chance and bought a good used one. It was simple and straight forward to do as long as ulyou follow the directions.
Bring to me in GA and Ill do labor for $400. Or tackle it yourself, not a bad job.
