    2012 F02 Oil Consumption

Wondering if anyone has any insight on this. My 2012 F02 w/8K miles has used about 2 quarts of oil in the past 6 weeks. Dealer states no leaks and that oil consumption is "normal" on new cars. The car performs perfectly and there are no visible signs of leaking or burning oil.

While I understand the break in contribution aspect of consuming some oil, it still seems very high for a modern car. FWIW I have/have owned in the past many BMW's as well as other marquis and have never seen oil consumption this high - I can't recall ever putting more than a quart in the 3 years I owned my previous E65.

    Thoughts?

I find this interesting. Has it always been burning this much oil?

Well I got the first "add oil" warning 5 weeks ago, at approximately 7K miles. The next just this past Thursday at 8K miles.

Have you had it since new? And have you checked everything yourself?

    Just 1 E38, for now
    Something is not right.

I had an old ford police car with the equivalent of 230-260k miles on it (factoring idle time plus odo reading.) And never burned oil. At the end of the 3000 miles it was still on full mark.

I have had it since new. If it was not leased and all under BMW maintenance and warranty I'd be more concerned. My feeling is if it blows up, they can put a new motor in it. If it's really f'd, I'll just give it back to them.

That said, I'm not convinced. If it uses another quart in the same time I may take it to a different dealer and see what they come up with.

The e39 m5 burns up to a quart per 1000 miles in spec. Is the exhaust blue?
Those are such new cars that the limited experience does not help. Call bmw na?

Not familiar with that eng, but does it actuatly have a dip stick or does it use the level sensor in the pan? if it has a level sensor only, i would get teh dealer to drain the oil and check and see how much is in there. B4 i left BMW i had to do this on many many new BMW's. the oil level sensor they are using is JUNK. I had a new E60 M5 i was pdi'n said it was low on oil, dumped in a qt, test drove aid it was low again. drain in bucket it had 10 qts in it. car had less than 20 miles and it got a new sensor.

N63's have no dipstick. But i will say that lately it seems like they got the oil level sensor thing worked out. Not saying we never replace them, but far less than we were several years ago.

And they do typically burn more oil during three first 10k miles than any other time. Especially the turbo cars

we are experiencing many oil burning concerns on the N63's. there is an updated crankcase vent line being released by BMW to remedy these problems.

    Having the exact same concern

I bought a 2009 F02 with 42000 miles on June 30. The car was a lease turn in. In the 5 months and 6000 miles that I have owned it, the car has reached minimum oil level three times (as of today). The dealer last told me that it's normal for these cars to lose a quart every 800 miles. That sounds rediculous that a German car would lose that much oil normally. I'm taking it back in today, we'll see what they say...

with that low of miles id say its likely a vent valve issue. With higher miles id say take a look at the turbos as they are becomming more of a common oil burning area.

Thanks for the response. I bought the car from BMW of Sterling, but have taken it to two other dealers (just ones that were close when the warning popped up) to add the oil. They were just responding to the low oil warning.

Armed with this information, I'll be contacting Sterling to have them look more closely at the issue.

My '13 750 has gone through 2 quarts in 2500 miles. I chalk it up to, twin turbos (turbos burm oil) and the engine still breaking in.

I bought my 2009 750i with 75,000 miles on it as of today and it is def burning oil when floored, specially in sport+ mode. The first week i owned it in late January i went through 2 qts of oil.

After the newness of the car wore off and i started driving normal(i drive this car for my job all over USA) i have put 10000 miles on it and the oil consumption has dramatically redused. It goes about 3k miles and needs a qt.

But if i floor it, there will be a cloud behind me. Any ideas or how hard it is to resolve this smoking issue under heavy acceleration?
Not a problem during normal driving.

I do luv this car, heads up display, sport mode, soft touch doors, 4 wheel steering....its just damn awesome until i try to exercise my v8 and the damn thing smokes like a 30 yr old 300,000 mile chevy pickup. Very embarrassing to say the least. I guess the smoking does have a bright side, because it smokes when i drive it hard, i dont drive it hard very often and my mpg is running around 21mpg.

Our 2010 750Li used 2 qts from Minneapolis to Florida on a recent trip. This car has always drank a good 2-3 quarts between oil changes. There is no leakage and the dealer says this is NORMAL.

It's normal. It's the turbos. Consume oil. My 2012 does the same

No it's not normal at all. It's happening bc of very high running temp. We installed modded tstat 90C and oil consumption dropped significantly and it runs much faster.
At least now f10 550i is a real track car and it runs so nice.
I think bmw knows about it and they simply don't want our engines to last more than 60k mls at least turbos die at this time. New turbo is not supposed to eat oil if everything is good and you don't rev it to redline all the time.
Btw all m3, m5 cars run 87C tstats and last pretty good. Same about Japanese cars. Nobody runs their engines at this crazy high temp 105C.
I wonder if get blue smoke disaster at 60-70k later like in 750 e65. Same engine pretty much except for turbos.

I found an interesting notation while reading the BMW N63 Engine - Technical Training Workbook (Page 20)

Note: If the exhaust system produces blue smoke, it is necessary to check whether the engine is also drawing oil into the combustion chamber through the crankcase breather, which suggest that there is a fault in the area of the crankcase breather. A clear sign of a problem is an oiled up clean-air pipe.

Is this a strait forward install on an F10 550?
