    M52B28 Block with M50B25 Head

    I have an e34 525i 1992 with M50B25 on it
I am willing to install on it the block of a M52B28
Do you know anyone that did this combination before ?
    any tips about it ?
does it make more hp and torque ? that's what I am expecting..
do you recommend this combination ? or should I try another powerful combination.. or should I just do an engine swap?
    thank you in advance...

There are two types of M50B25s. One was in 91 and then it changed to an improved designed with variable valve timing (called Vanos) which gave it the code M50TUB25. First we need to determine which engine you have.

The M50TUB25 cylinder head will bolt right on to a M52B28. I actually have a M50TUB25 head on my S52B32 or S52.

Changing the cylinder head between cars really won't add any power. What adds power is the camshafts in the engines.

Well any vanos head (M50, M52, S50, S52) will interchange among themselves. I have only seen pics of a non-vanos head, but they look very similar to the vanos head. It might be that they are the same, just without the vanos.

There is one problem that you will run into. Your car is OBD1 and the M52 block is OBDII. On the OBD1, I believe the crank position sensor is on the front of the engine. I believe there is a spot for it on the M52 block, but it is not used. The M52 uses a different location.

Increasing from a 2.5 to a 2.8 Liter maybe increase 10 to 15 horsepower. It is not really worth the work for fun. But if you 2.5 engine is tired and you need a replacement, it is worth it.

Yes it will work. To keep in your e34, just use your existing harness, and ignore the rear crank sensor on the m52 block. You may need to get a chip made for the comination if you want a little more power. Otherwise it'll run on the 2.5L fuel and ignition maps.

I have a question about all of this. Is it possible to bolt up a s52b32 head to the m52b28 block?

Cant some pretty cool M54/S52/M50/S50 hybrids be created by utilizing different parts from each respective engine, since they are all basically the same? Like an M54 block for lightweight while maintaining strength, S52 crank with M54 pistons and S50 head?

S/M50/s/M52 head/block are totally different then the m52tu (e46/e39), only the internals can be swapped out as the blocks and heads are the same. All m52 and m50 heads will work together.
