    8er v 6er

I'm considering dropping a few notches and trading my 840ci for a 645ci, overal looks are lacking compared to the 8 but are growing on me very quickly, have any of the 8er family had any dealings with the 6??? ( there is not as much activity on the 6 forum)
Am I doing the right thing??

I owned an '05 645Ci for over 3 years. I've owned my 840 for almost 8 years. Obviously the 6 represents almost 20 years of engineering and technical advancements. The 6 outhandles and outperforms the e31 in almost every way. The 6 handles like it's on rails, braking is typical BMW (breathe on the pedal and it bites down), it's fast (for what it is - a heavy GT). It was an enjoyable car to drive and very similar in overall "purpose" to the 8.

BUT, it is NOT an 8. It lacks (IMO) the level of design detail and head turning looks that the 8 has. And, the technology-laden 6 can be a downside. I experienced it. Numerous electrical/computer "gremlins" that were not resolved until the district rep approved a complete replacement of the main system. Parasitic drain was a problem (like the 8). Mine was a daily driver.

I know, I know - the 8 has many of the same issues. But, When it came time to get rid of one of the toys it was the 6, of course. I needed a more practical vehicle as my son got older. I opted for a Land Rover to haul his sports gear and take camping.

It was a decent experience and I enjoyed the car during the time I had it. I didn't "love" it though like I do the 8.

    My firsthand .02 worth...

Thanks for your comments, it's interesting reading your views, I guess your right the 8 is petty much a stand alone classic, funny though, thinking back to when I was talking to the dealer about my 8 it was clear that I was not really that bothered about a deal! And when he took it round the block it sounded awesome, (first time I had heard it with the stainless system fitted being driven by another person)
    What am I thinking!?!

I contemplated a similar move a while back.
I thought there are many advantages on paper, better mpg, composite panels, modern, however, I don't think my heart was really in it...
Take a look at some 6ers, there are plenty around...
Exactly! Every other car you see is a 6. Four years on and haven’t had a relapse.

All that aside it's horses for courses. If I were doing mega miles in all conditions and couldn't give the 8 a pampered life style, who knows.

The E63 will come up 2 short!)
Good point, you will still either be a 4 or 2 shorter.

I'm looking at an 07 M6 with 27,000KM at my Local BMW dealer. I personally love the looks of the old and new 6er.

I however, will not be selling my e31. I wouldn't trade it for a 6er... unless a really really REALLLY clean M635CSi was offered, and then maybe, but that's not even the same car

    OMG AT THE 660 :O

650 and up is not a ladies car. Also why do those women need a car? Their kitchen can't be that big.

Do NOT get rid of a 8 for a 6. Instead just go by the six and don't tell your wife. Poke the 8 in the garage . Leave the 6 with her for a week and pow, she accepts having both.

Don't do it if at all possible; unless you have a compelling reason. But, only you know your situation.

What always gives me grins is the guys in porsches, vettes mustangs etc that pull along side me to race. I look faaassst and just smile at them like I wont be botherd. Let them wonder. You wont get that in an e63 unless its the Maniac6 Keep the 8 and the smile.
p.s. only we know the truth.

I like the E24 I would get one of those to park next to my E31, but not to replace it. I don't care much for the E63.

I don't know prices in the US, but if someone in Germany would ask the OP's question I would add to all what has been said already:
If you need to sell your E31 in order to get an E63 you can't afford it.
