97 BMW M3 Check control brake light failure ?

Recently I changed the tail lights on my 1997 m3. There was faulty wiring looked like they were burned I separated the wires from the harness that connects to the tail lights. On the driver side there was a wire that wasn't on the left, I connected those wires we're they were suppose to go , and the light came off. But all of a sudden it appears ? It won't go off. Any help would be appreciated !

It seems like a common issue on these cars. The loom that goes from the body and enters trunk lid usually goes bad. I have repaired mine, but I would still get a phantom check message. Another thing I plan on replacing is brake light switch that is located above the brake pedal. I would look into these common trouble spots. So you might have had 2 separate issues going on at the same time. I would also clean bulb contacts.
