My 72 Bavaria Smokes and smokes - fix or replace engine?

So--my 72 Bavaria has never been a daily driver. I have driven it twice since I got it running. It smokes and smokes (blue)--to the point it is not safe for anyone to follow me. The engine purrs nicely. I tried a quality engine cleaner and changed the oil. I believe the engine is out of a 75. Any suggestions other than a full rebuild?

I can get an engine out of a 1987 635csi--but it is an automatic car and fuel injection. Can I use that engine and swap the dual webber carbs? I can use still use the stock manual transmission in the car? It works great and has a new clutch.

You can swap engines with a minimum of fuss but you will have to go with an electric fuel pump, as the later engine has no holes for the mechanical fuel pump used in the Bav. You can use the original trans without a problem.
