Hi All - Wanted to let you know I'm the new owner of "the Chicago Baur".
The ad was no exaggeration, paint (specifically clear coat) is in horrible shape, lots of dents (was in a hail storm at some point), seats, carpeting and side/door panels are trash and interior smells so bad I almost fell over when I opened the door. Trunk wouldn't close (had been broken into) and drivers door wouldn't close either, But appears to be rust free (we'll see when the carpet is pulled up) other than a small spot behind the battery. Car definitely had an "E" engine, and no ABS. Seller did have the hood, which I brought home with the car.
But on the plus side, it's a Baur, Euro bumpers and grills, OBC and check panel are in German, most of the hard to find stuff is there and the dash isn't cracked. Not bad for $500. Worked to get the car closed up yesterday, doors and truck now work. Beyond that I probably won't do much with the car until Spring other than make sure it'll stay dry inside.
I will be needing either a part # or information on how to get a red drivers side clip that the targa top goes into near the windshield and one of the plastic pieces that the soft top clips into on the targa bar. Also looking for information on the Baur specific rubber seals for the soft top and targa top, they're all pretty well gone on this car.

Ton and Jeroen,
Yes indeed, it is a Baur. It belongs to the owner's son, whom I believe told me that he pulled it out of a corn field. I don't have its Baur number, however; sorry.

Wow, Ed, that really is a lot like yours; it's quite a find.
Is it for sale? And is it fixable?

That's the B43051-13, sold by Riemer&Oberst in Bad Kreuznach (a small hour drive to the west of Frankfurt, so this might be not the first these two met).
Gr Jeroen
Jeff , it is close to my car I don't have power windows aside from that they are almost identical. It's fixable however, the insurance company has totaled it so if fixed it will end up with a "salvage" title which cuts it's value in half. The estimate to fix it is over $10K it would be a hard decision for me to make if I owned it, The owner is planning on repairing it at this point. we'll see what happens.
You are the man Jereon !
As Tom says " It's a small Baur world " here's the full story about my search for this car.
There is a small independent BMW sales and service provider located in the Lakes region of the state, they have been around for many and have great reputation, I know a guy who works there and about four or five years ago I ran into him and he told me that this car had been in for service, when he first saw it he thought it was my car with good reason as we all can clearly see.
I asked him to pass along my contact info to the owner, which he did , the owners are not enthusiasts so I understand . As time went on I kept that car in the back of mind and hoped I'd find it one day.
Last week I was sitting at my desk at work and the internet sales manager came up to me and said he had a guy on the phone who had questions about a 1984 323i convertible, and parts availability. I looked at him and said " it has to be a Baur if its a 1984 convertible" The call gets transferred to me and I have a half hour long conversation with the insurance adjuster who is handling the claim.
After a very short time I realize that it's the car I have looking for all this time. The adjuster put the body shop owner in contact with me and the rest is history.
A small Baur world indeed
Now where is next unknown Baur going to be found ?

Great story
I think it is possible to fix this car, or did the fenders touch the doors? Anyone noticed the sidelights on the front? Those are standard BMW-indicators whichs are normally placed here:
Gr Jeroen
The car had been painted and someone added the side markers because they could not find them in HTK or ETK, in the U.S. market you found the side markers that were used on greymarket cars in the 1975-76 2002 diagram, however many TC2 owners here report that the markers used on thier cars had Benz part #'s on them. I used 2002 parts on mine when I replaced my front markers.
I agree that the car is repairable the point is that it's value in the end overshadows the value of it if you can not do the work yourself, the body shop they use is top notch and normally only does restoration work on hot rods and other high end stuff.

Jeroen,
Yes, I did notice the unusual placement of the Euro side marker lights.
Mine does indeed have the M-B markers as previously mentioned, but at least the lenses interchange with 2002 side markers so no worries about finding replacements there.
