Hi all,
Long time follower first time poster. I have an Automatic 318i 92 model. Around 6 months ago i noticed that occasionally on start up the car would shudder (if i pump the gas the idle will smooth out) It appears there is not enough fuel getting to the engine. Like i said this happens only occasionally and only when cold. An injector cleaner deposited into the petrol tank often corrects this issue.
I would assume the following issue is linked. Again occasionally when coming to a stop (Lights, traffic etc..) the car shudders to the point of shutting off. I have noticed that if i turn the AC on to 3 or 4 the shuddering subsides. The shuddering also dies down if i place the transmission into N.
I'm not sure what these issues would indicate? Faulty O2 Sensor? Bad Leads? Old Plugs? Injector issues? Idle regulator?
The car runs like a dream the rest of the time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Im new to BMWs but what about the fuel pump? it might be going bad which would explain the rough idle. When you push the gas it forces the pump to work harder and warm up quicker. As time goes on everything would happen more and more with a failing pump. Just an idea since ive only had my bmw for 3 days now.
You really need to start with the basics. Plugs, clean the MAF, clean the ICV, check for cracked hoses. And make sure you are running Premium gas

Thanks Flyfishvt,
Plugs are good, cleaned the MAF, checked for cracked hoses - all fine and im running premium fuel. This leads me to think it may be the ICV, i plan to tackle this shortly.
Redmane36 - Fuel pump has been checked and given the all clear (This was my first thought).
Telltale sign of intake and/or icv, update when you check and clean above mentioned parts.
Hey op i dont mean to hijack your thread but i have a similar problem with my 96 BMW 320i and wanted to know if you found out what your issue was. thanks please update
Sounds like a cranky injector or a malfunctioning coil pak, mine does this occasionally but clears up when it reaches operating temp.
The issue of shuddering while coming to a stop could be a vacuum leak or a dirty ICV. I took mine out and cleaned it and found the shaft did not want to turn. I sprayed some cleaner into it and turned the vane with a pencil (no lead just pointy end) and it freed right up. Been fine ever since.
I had thought of taking off the throttle plate assy. and spraying cleaner directly into the fitting on the manifold to reach the icv, but had to pull the intake for something else and took care of it then.

Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.
Hi all,
Just wanted to update. Had the car in at my local dealer for brake work and while it was there i had them pay some attention to the ICV or IAC (Idle Air Control Valve). It appears that THIS is causing rough idle as when the car is stopped at lights/ in traffic the IAC is not letting enough air into the engine causing it to run rough. The solution is a new IAC....
I thank you all for the help!!
Good Lord I hope not. Didn't they try to clean it first? When I pulled mine out it was just like one of the other posts mentioned. It was built up with brown varnish and wouldn't move. it took a whole can of carb cleaner but it finally got clean and works like a dream now.
If they already replaced it then i guess its too late. I hope you got the old one from them
Just cleaned mine, now my 318ti idles perfect. Not too difficult of a job, also replaced all my vacuum lines under the intake manifold while it was off, most were cracked and falling apart. There are lots of great write ups on here for it.
similar problem on mine ... i'm buying a new fuel pump, filter, cleaning the stuff during the week.
Unfortunately Flyfishvt i cleaned it and BMW cleaned it however it will still get stuck occasionally. I'm not overly bothered now i know what is causing the problem. I'm sourcing a new part myself as BMW want too much for one.
check the vac hoses. im gonna be changing all mine tomorrow cuz some of them have cracks in them and it can affect your idle. spray brake cleaner on it and listen for it to rev its self or stall. then you found your leak. i found 6 of them :P im also gonna clean my ICV tomorrow as well since it aint been done in long time
I've replaced the ICV with a brand new one (got it for a steal on Ebay from someone with no idea), i've also replaced the 2 vac hoses that connect to the ICV. I've noticed an improvement BUT the car still shudders a little bit when stopped... What else could be causing this problem???
