    SMG No Reverse

When SMG is placed on reverse, the gear indicator shows that it is in reverse "R" but when you step on the gas nothing happens. You have to try numerous times (putting it back to drive mode and back to reverse) before it really backs up. The local shop here tells me i have to change my GEAR SHIFTING STEPTRONIC(part #25122283852) which cost around $400+. Has anyone here had the same problem?

    Thanks,
    Charlie

    Could be the shifter.

I'd start by changing out the SMG relay (it's a $10 max part) and is #3 in this diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...61&fg=25&hl=13 If that fixes it, you saved yourself a few bills.

That could be the issue but he says he is not getting reverse but he does catch drive witch in part the shift actuator is not engaging the reverse.

i already changed the salmon relay.. the shop told me it should be the shifter, there's a sensor that's suppose to trigger/engage the gear to reverse and my sensor is busted. ever heard of this before?

Oddly enough, I've heard of the salmon relay going bad multiple times.

for future reference: it was this part "GEAR SHIFTING STEPTRONIC(part #25122283852)". changed it, and now it goes in reverse everytime without a skip.

Yup.. $421 to be exact. Plus had to pay extra $100+ cuz the BMW dealer here charges "corkage" fee for parts not bought from them. Bummer
