Hi there,
I have a question.
What is the absolute BEST & most EXPENSIVE Automatic Transmission Fluid fluid out there for Power Steering that you can purchase for "Top ups" on a NON Self Leveling Suspension E38????
And how would one go about getting some
and would someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE....Explain to me WHY on earth!!!! Would you use TRANSMISSION fluid forthe steering wheel?!?!?!
John tried to explain it to me last night.....but i'm just not gettin it!
Thank You!!!

Best and most expensive?? BMW- what other option could there be hahaha.
BMW uses ATF for the power steer fluid, but other systems have used engine oil, and the 750 uses Pentosin as a tandem pump is employed for steering and suspension. Its whatever the system designer thinks is best for a given application keeping in mind the spec of the materials such as O rings and sealsand what fluid they tolerate...Which is why its so important to use the correct fluids in these cars.
I use Castrol ATF+4 FOR MY (ATF ONLY) power steering resovoir
2000 740i Sport
Redline D4; Amsoil ATF; Pentosin ATF1; Torco RTF Racing Trans Fluid, this is a group IV/V Full syn oil or Hivis ATF.
Power steering is a low velocity hydraulic system with no significant need for lubrication (relatively to other parts or systems in a car). What you need is any incompressible fluid that will just get the job done. As a designer it's just smart to use something easily available and relatively cheap that could possible cover other needs if you want to combine reservoirs for multiple systems or whatever.
You don't have to use something expensive for the power steering (it's going to leak anyway - I top up once a month or so :p), save up for some good ATF for a flush of the actual tranny or for some good quality engine oil.
My .02 cents as an engineer.

I use Dexron 3 and im done. No need for $7.99 bottle of Plus 4 or Mercon 5. 3 will do just fine. If you put fluid in and you think it was the problem, the issue was already there...
I use Castrol ATF, see here: http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/st...egoryId_212351
My steering was groaning recently on full lock, turns out my fluid was low. Topped it off with this and all is great.
I just recently maybe 3 Weeks ago had my Valve Gaskets Redone....as well as had my Power steering hoses/lines replaced.
How would I know what fluid THEY put in there.....And is it okay to mix fluids or no???
Example: They put in whatever fluid they used to reup the level after they got through installing the new lines..... And I wanna top up with a fluid ( But will MORE THAN LIKELY use a DIFFERENT fluid, Because I have no choice..Because I DO NOT know what is in the resevoir already???? )......Yay or Nay????

Yay, as long as they used tranny fluid (which they should have) your fine. Dex3 is the low side anyhting above that is just approved upon dex3...
The one fluid on this car people don't argue over!
Totally stock 97 740iL except for SatRad
You can use Lubegard also. I've just read their power steering fluid check this out.

I used Dexcron mercon by castrol and my power steering was loose...I didnt have confidence switching lanes on the freeway say doing 80...I felt like 1 sneeze and Il be done for......Definitely put in the right stuff......I finally had enuff and removed the fluid and poured the atf+4 and my steering went back to a smooth firm grip...

Where is the best place to drain the system of ps fluid? I wouldnt mind draining off a litre and topping it up with new.
Ask the shop what the put in there. Dexron 3 is fine. Any good brand will do. As long as your car does not have self leveling which you said it doesn't. Personally I like Valvoline.
I use this stuff.
atf
When I replaced the Hi-presure hose on my 1/98 740iL, there was two hoses coming down from the reservoir tank (one input & one output), it took me 32oz to fill from empty. Raise the car and disconnect a hose from the gear box. But before you do that use a cleaner/flush like this

then drain and refill. Amsoil has a new PSF that meets the new Dexron VI application.
The guy at Autozone recommended Pentosin CHF 11S. Does that meet the ATF only requirements?
I use Redline D4 ATF from summit racing delivered to your front door
I put Mobile 1 synthetic ATF in my 750 power steering that was a little low this morning....was that a bad thing?
