    DYI for Fire Extinguisher

Gang, I had looked and I didn't see a DIY for installing the Fire Extinguisher on the E-46. I have Sports seats, so it wasn't too difficult to install.
As a side note: I don't know what the underside of the standard seat looks like.

First I went to Lowe's to pick-up the metal bracket and hardware to attach it to the seat:
    1. Metal bracket: Stanley Corner braces 3"X 3/4'" P/N S839-001/DPB115
    2. Speed Nuts wide #6: Hillman P/N 881245
    3. Self drilling/tapping Bolts: Hillman 14 x 3/4 P/N 881844
    4. First Alert Fire Extinguisher - I bought it at the Post Exchange, Lowes didn't have one for the Car type.
    Total spent: $18.00!

First I located the holes under the seat, they are on the inside by the hump and about 3" back from the front of the seat.

Second, tap the screws into the holes:

    And the second screw.

Once you have tapped the holes, remove the screws and add the speed nuts to the metal corner braces.

Install the corner braces, don't tighten them down all the way, wait until the Fire Extinguisher bracket has been installed.

Use two of the phillips screws that came with the corner braces to attach the plastic fire extinguisher bracket to the speed nuts.

Attach the bracket and tighten down the bolts.

Now just place the Fire extinguisher into the bracket and your are done!

    And that's it!

It took me 20 minutes and that was taking my time on the first one. I installed it on both of my cars, so it cost me less the 40 bucks which is the cost of the BMW type so two for the price of one!
I would have to rate it at a 1 out of 10 for work, no special tool need, just a Phillips #2 screwdriver, a 1/4" drive with a 10mm socket and 3" extension.

Why not mount it in the trunk? Is it visible at all in the cabin? (Hard to tell from the photos)

Not unless you bend your head over. The thigh support covers it mostly, so you see a small portions of it when you climb in. My feet don't hit it when I bring my shoes back so that isn't a problem.

I skipped the trunk, since you don't have time to grab it if there is an emergency.

I think it's more appropriate on the passenger side.

    Thanks for the good words!

It might fit over there, but I have a first aid kit in the wagon, but nothing in the M3.

I have a fire extinguisher in the trunk. I keep it in the cardboard box so it doesn't roll around; it is larger than the one shown. I have enough other stuff in the trunk it does slide around.

Nice, neat solution but doesn't rob leg room from the back seat pax? Of course some people never have back seat pax, I rarely do.

I did use a fire extinguisher once in my life about 15 years ago. I came across someone who had parked on the side of the road and their hot catalytic converter had started the dry grass under the car on fire which then started the undercoating burning. Shooting the dry powder from the upwind side under the car doused the flames very quickly. At the time I had a Kidde extinguisher in my trunk. I went to get it re-filled and the guy at the shop said they don't refill those since the valve is plastic and therefore not reliable after use. So he sold me a nice Badger extinguisher with a legit refillable, metal valve for not much more than I paid for the Kidde, which is the one I still have -- and its still holding the charge. Both of them were the dry chemical variety (ABC multipurpose).

I just discovered after a whole bunch of FAQ reading that that's where the OEM BMW fire extinguisher gets mounted. Nice DIY!

Thanks! Yep I had wanted to use the same mounting points on the drives seat, and this one lined up perfect! It is just a 5 lbs, but it will do the job until EMS arrives.
What made me think about putting one in was last week watching CNN and up in Atlanta a E-46 caught fire - Yes I know the person wasn't doing the right thing!

Nice! Does this limit how far the tight bolster can move up/down in/out? I've been meaning to do something like this for a while...

Awesome DIY. Now I'm thinking about a fire extinguisher but I will have to mount it some where else since I installed the euro first aid boxes under both seats.

It is funny... people who drive anything expensive often get labeled by folks who drive less expensive cars. I have found, without exception, that douchebags cover all demographics and incomes. You can be an douchebag in a Echo or an Escalade.

You want a fire extinguisher where you can reach it quickly. This normally precludes having it in the trunk.

Very nice work. 2 questions. 1st, looks so from pics, but did you manage to do this with the seat raised to it's highest and or reclined position?
2nd, does the extinguisher limit the seat from lowering down to it's lowest position, being tall I need all the head room I can get.
Where am I going? And why am I in this handbasket!

I'd do it if I didn't hide my NOS tanks under my seats.

Awesome! Thanks--I was looking for what self tapping screws I need to mount my first aid box.

For those carrying around fire extinguishers both in the cabin or in the trunk, are there any ramifications for when the ambient outside temperatures boil over the triple digits? Any chance that these things can explode?
