Hi guys
Wanted to open my sunroof, and it tilted while the screen was on its way to the back..
The front sunroof tilts on command, although my rear is stuck. And now my shader won't go past halfway!.
Please let me know how I can manually close that rear section.. and If I could possible fix this myself? I cant afford to spend 3000+$ at the stealership.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE:
I re initiated the sunroof by holding/pressing the button UP, and the window shader now works perfectly! (yay)
It did it whole sequence, front panoramic window tilted, shader was sliding.. BUT the rear one didnt budge at all! ???
How can I get this thing down !
Thanks in advance.
Also - one touch doesnt work, it seems to stop every 2-3 inches.

Look in your tool kit and you should have a tool like #8 in this diagram.

This is the manual way to close the roof.
You can manually lower the rear roof as follows:
1. Remove the panel above your centre rear view mirror.
(this is described in your cars owners manual)
2. When your rear sunroof is open, in the opening gap you can see the control carriage. There is one Left and Right.
3. Take a screw driver and push both carriages backwards (use some but not extreme force). Possibly you can move one side and not the other, this is the symptom of the defect.
4. Take your (on board) hex wrench tool, put in the hex hole of the motor above your rear view mirror.
5. Manually close the roof.
I also have a modification which disables the rear roof, while all other functions will work. This is a PDF file, I don't know how to upload this to this forum.
My modification can be downloaded from:

I have the same issue. I notice that there's a triangular ramp on both sides of the rear, does that ramp slide back to close?
Yes, the triangles left and right push the rear roof to the open position.
These parts are called "control carriage".
When the rear roof jams (is open), the main mechanism is not able to push the control carriages backwards. If so, you have push them manually backwards and then close the roof with your allen tool.

Has anyone tried the fix prescribed by TFH. I can't stomach the thought of the dealer repair on a car that's probably worth 15k or less on a good day. I'd be content to disengage the rear piece of glass if the front continues to work.

I just performed this minor surgery on my panorama sunroof today. Symptoms were that rear panel would tilt up, but not close completely, causing front panel to attempt to close but then jam up against front of rear panel glass and return to tilt position as well. Recycling the sunroof, blah, blah, blah did nothing.
This DIY fix by TFH absolutely WORKS!
Follow it carefully and take your time. The fussiest part is moving the rear wedges back so that the rear panel will close from the tilt up position. I used a phillips screwdriver that I could jam into the hole in the middle of the wedge, and then gently tapped it with a hammer to manually move the wedges rearward. Once done, I could close the roof and reopen the front panel rearward and perform the surgery as specified.
So now the front panel opens/tilts/closes completely along with the sun shade. The rear panel is permanently closed in the down position - so what - BFD! I got my sunroof back at zero expense.
Kudos TFH!!!!

I've also done the repair. Took about an hour and worked like a charm ... Can't say that I've missed the operation of the rear vent in the 4 months or so since I modified it.
I sold this car after a very lengthy restoration, but it's just too pretty to remove from my sig.
The drive cables for the rear glass have plastic brackets, the tabs on one or both side have broken off. Individual parts are no longer available for early panoramic sunroofs(rebuilding it is labor intensive anyways). A replacement cassette is in the range of $2000-3000 depending on source/discount, that doesnt include labor.
This just happened to me today! It is 45° out and I was just trying to get a little fresh air in and when I went to close the roof, mine popped and a price of plastic was laying in the right track. Guess once I get mine repaired, I am disabling the rear part.

Get BMW parts .com has the cartridge for under $2k shipped. Genuine BMW part. I got lucky with a local shop and only paid $300 in labor. Dealer quoted 5k installed.
Here are the instructions I found and they are from TFH.

I will do this today or tomorrow and report back. One of the front sliders was damaged when the rear roof jammed and the front tried to un-tilt. I used some epoxy on the and sanded them down. Mine is an 04 and I don't think there are any parts available for the early cars.
Here is an update. I took a really good look at all of the parts in there and most of them have cracks in them. So i put back the piece I repaired with 2 part epoxy and reassembled the roof. Disconnected the front motor and will be done with it. I know if I use it anymore it will just break at one of those cracked areas. Oh well the only other choice is to find a used roof from like a 2009 or 2010 and swap it all over. I really don't use it enough to justify that at this time. I will do like most of the other X-3 owners and just enjoy the sun coming in the glass roof.
2010, I know...
But i need help disabling the rear glass venting. As mine wont close on its own, the sliders get stuck. So i had to use that hex bit manual closing little by little pushing the sliders back and turning the bit. After some banging on the glass corners it sits flush, but i wouldn't want it to happen when my girl or whoever drives it.
