Tools in trunk 86 325 es

Could someone provide a picture of what tools should be in the trunk carrier. There are somethings missing at the bottom left.

    OOOoooo...thas perty! =)

From what I hear though, not all of those tools came standard in U.S. models. I'm missing that yellow thing on the left, the z-shaped tool in the middle, and the long piece that goes in the tube. Anyone know where I can get 'em? Oh yeah, and one of those kick ass cloths too!

A couple of fanatics on the e24 forum had some reproduction tool kit cloths produced: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...ht=blue+cloths Might be a little pricey for a blue rag though . . .

FYI, the yellowed nylon tool in the lower left is an emergency window crank. It only came on cars with an access cap in the door panel. PN is 71111150500

    Z-shaped thing
    EMERGENCY TOOL ELECT.WINDOW/SLIDING ROOF 54121873572

    The pin
    EMERGENCY TOOL ELECTR.WINDOW 71111150191

I believe this is a different style tool for the same purpose as the nylon one. It's also possible that they are used in conjunction. I'd have to go look on my wife's E28.

Search by PN. BTW, only the Z shaped tool is listed for the E30. The other 2 are listed for the E28, etc. If your car does not have the door panel plugs to access the window mechanism, all you need is the Z tool. In that case it's only used on the sunroof. For E30s with the plugs, you use the same tool for the window. IIRC, the nylon one screws into the mechanism and then is driven by the spark plug tool. It may not be usable on the E30. Also these get old and brittle. By the time anyone has to use one, it will likely fail. The pin style requires a hex shaped hole at the window mechanism. I don't know if it is the same dimension as the Z tool.

Remember the same tool tray was used in multiple models. That's why there may be "missing" tools.

Another thing, the blue polishing cloth is listed as PN 71111115810 and ended. However a search of the part at Bell BMW's parts site shows it available for ~$2.50. I don't know if it is "as original", but it's cheap enough to buy one and find out.

In what emergency do you go to your trunk, unscrew the tool box, grab the tool, get BACK IN your car, and roll down the window???

That tool never worked for me. Just hold the tire on with your feet and spin the bolts on..

That's not the problem that it solves.

Try putting on the front wheel -- the hub spins freely, making it difficult to align the holes in the wheel with the holes in the hub. It's much more difficult than the rear wheel, where the LSD or parking brake provides enough drag to keep the hub from spinning as you align the holes.

That said, I rarely use the alignment pin. I find it faster to just remove the wheel completely and place it on the hub again. But I might be atypical -- I remove a set of four wheels at least once a month, sometimes just to wash them.

I believe it's a dual purpose tool. It can also be used as the driver for the spark plug socket.

That is how I do it too.
I just need to get around to acquiring the screw that holds the brake disc on...
It is a nightmare to spin both the tire and the disc to get the bolts back on.

Always buy that screw new, slather it with anti-seize and install it barely finger tight. It's captive, so it doesn't even need to be snug.
I've had even a new screw w/ only light anti-seize stick after only a year. I still have that screw, with a broken-off drill bit embedded in it, stuck in my e30 hub.
