So I had been contemplating getting an exhaust installed for a long time. I didn't really like what was available, and what I did like was too expensive for just sound (Gruppe M)...the only performance gain I expected from this was the weight reduction and I knew I wanted something pretty loud.
So what to do when all aftermarket options are either too heavy, sound bad or are too expensive? Have something custom built.
I had a good experience with Magnaflow in the past, so I decided to go that route again.
I made some measurements under the car, the tips, clearance from the ground, etc. and ended up ordering:
2 x Magnaflow mufflers (PART #10416) 2.5" in/out, 4" Round.
2 x 2.5" in -> 3.25" out
I got all the stuff and didn't like the overly polished look of the tips, so I had them powdercoated satin black
On the lift
Heavy pig out. (I had them hack off that piece so the flanges would stay together.
I took a few pics of the actual install, but they came out blurry.
Here's one side done
And here's a shot of the underside of the other side
All done, 3 hours later :drums:
Tips are really dirty in these shots...
And another crappy shot from outside under the crazy hot sun
Can't even see the tips in this one
And to continue the crappy footage theme, here's a video (audio/video don't sync up, but gives you a general idea of the volume/tone.

All in all, I'm very happy with the setup. The mufflers are still breaking in a little bit, but most of the rasp is gone, even without resonators. The volume is on par with a Gruppe M, but a bit deeper in the lower range. It REALLY wails when you run through the gears, and downshifts =
There is some drone between 2-2.5k, but its not bad at all when I'm just cruising, and its not hard to avoid that 500rpm range on the street and freeway. I'm contemplating getting headers or even removing the resonator...
Altogether, the new setup weighs around 15 lbs and the tips filled out the openings very nicely, the satin black goes perfectly with the rest of the blacked-out theme...they'll look great with a CSL diffuser too. :thumbsup2:
I'll try to get some better photos and videos NOT taken with my phone.
Looking good
I know off the subject but I like your wheels. Where did you get them.
Your right black tips do look good
I KNOW WHAT GOOD IS
^Wheels are from Vorshlag.
Here's a new vid.
Sound is blown out, and idle at the beginning is from a cold start, so it sounds weird...it really idles much lower, like at the end of the video.
I never revved past 4-4.5k RPM, so you can imagine how much louder it gets under load at redline

I like it, you saved a good amount of money and shed nearly 50 lbs. Do you feel any loss of torque throughout the power band? That would be my only concern. Looking good though!
Looks good and sounds good. I am sure it sounds a lot better in person.
Looks good, by the way where did you get those Y-pipes?
damn thats loud???? you dont get a headache with the drone??

The drone is virtually gone...I guess they just had to be broken in.
The only time I heard a droning hum is at 2k RPM, and I'm never that low.
Overall, really happy with how it turned out.
so how much did this set you back (total parts and labor)? i think it sounds good and the satin tips look great, but i'm not digging the staggered tips...it doesn't flow with the rear bumper...
Where did you source the tips from??
This is my signature....
damn thats loud. prob sounds even better in person. not a fan of the tips but nice job overall

hot! love the black tips. wish they fit OEM exhaust...
I actually love the staggered tips.
I got them from a vendor on e90post
that sounds amazing... if I had an E46 M3, I would do this set up!

if your car is like mine, it will drone like mad if you remove the resonator. I didn't think mine was that bad, but everyone who rides in my car seems to think it is crazy loud. Oh yeah, and when I was driving behind my buddy in his M3, he said my car was drowning out his borla exhaust
BTW, here's the borla on the m3:

It's pretty quiet imo, especially inside the car. It's an excellent system for someone wants a refined, classy exhaust.
Not bad.
