I heard from someone to use .5 quarts of ATF 200 miles before an oil change to help quiet a noisy lifter. I know it's a strong detergent and don't want to create other problems by cleaning too much gunk out of my engine. Experiences with noisy lifters and additives?
There's a lot of debate on whether or not additives should ever be used in an engine. Without getting into any of that, the simple way to quiet lifters is thicker oil. You could just use a heavier weight oil in your next oil change, or you could try an additive like slick50, or any like product.
people keep telling me about something called AutoRX ive never used it but i keep meaning to look into it.

the only problem with some of these products in old high mileage engines is that some of the baked on gunk is the only thing keeping the engine sealed. It sounds ridiculous, but there have been cases where people do engine flushes with a product like AutoRX, and shortly after develop smoking issues.
I think the biggest problems with the engine cleaners is that people forget how to use them properly. I bet a bunch of people pour the stuff in their motors and take their cars for a drive. If you add something into the oil that's not oil, you're cutting the lubricity of the oil. So after you add the cleaner just let the car idle for about half an hour; The detergents will do their job.
^^^ all excellent points ^^^
And whatever you do - do not hotrod the engine with additives in the oil. And change the oil/filter after just 3-4 (EDIT: 1-1.25) hours of normal engine temp. I too have heard good stories of .5qt of ATF, even Seafoam as per instructions.

Ive used the lucas oil stabilizer. Its not a cleaner but it made start ups and operation of my old 328 allot quieter and smoother.
did you check to see if you have enough oil in there first? most common cause of loud lifters.

just honk if you see me on the road.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
Is this real?
I've used both synthetic n mineral Lucas oil stabilizer with 20w50 Castrol gtx. Found the mineral actually works better at quieting lifter noise. Crazeetowntatto's mileage makes me happy I've got "only" 135k. Nice to know he's still running strong, tho. Peace. PG
