Electric piston ring gap filer made out of a dremel

    http://www.teglerizer.com/triumphstuff/75w_newrings.htm

    My free version.

Worked really well. I kept a cup of distilled water around for quick cooling and constantly checked the grind for straightness by squeezing the ring closed. I mostly nailed the gaps by +-.0003" which is pretty good I think, and only took me an hour or so. I only ground one side and used the top of the cutter disk so that the grind was inward. I tapped the ring slowly and lightly against the face and found that moving it back and forth made it harder to keep straightness.

    Cool ring filer idea!

    Heres my latest contraption.

I got tired of paying people to do relatively simple things. Took me a few hours and about $15 to build from scrap materials.

    Cheers

Edit* how do i embed a photobucket vid? (close enough dominic, thanks!)

I would suggest something to protect the paint from the bare metal.

    Great idea thought.

I used a 4x4 with two pieces of 3/4" plywood nailed to the sides of it for legs. It worked great for dropping my oil pan.

    I'm wondering about this.

Is there any benefit to the pair of blocks (like in that picture) versus the single piece version from the Haynes?

I was thinking about making a pair of the blocks, but if there isn't really any benefit I'd rather not waste my time and just go with the single piece.

Just rent the cam block tool. It really isnt worth cutting corners there, especially when you can rent the entire set of vanos and cam tools for $30.

Cutting corners= cutting up a piece of sheet metal to mimic CNC machined tool that was made to keep camp position +/-1 degree off spec just to save a couple bucks. The rental is $30. Do it right.

I made that cam block out of half inch lexan and it worked perfectly. its a quality drawing, id rather use it than the BMW one.

I also have the surfcam file for it somewhere if anyone wants it, i can always convert it to IGES if that works too.

If you can make it out of a thick material it should work well. Using sheetmetal just seems dumb to me.

Is that for testing/flowmatching fuel injectors?

I made a couple sets of those cam blocks. The blocks themselves are black anodized aluminum. The bridge is 1/4" stainless. All the hardware is stainless and metric. They turned out pretty good. I've got a few extra of these so if you're interested I've post them up in the classifieds.

More info please, how are you timing the injector pulses?

All you need is a piece of scrap angle iron. Drill two holes and grind out a notch in the middle to clear the crank bolt. Just cut it long enough to reach the floor (at least 3 ft or so). Picture is shown for clarity, I would only torque this with the engine mounted in the car, unless you have a way to support the front of the engine to keep it from tipping over.
Did you make that out of a iron bed frame?? How well did it work for you? I would like to make one myself as well
