The time has come. My new build has begun.

well, i guess ill just start a short list for now since i have many unknowns so far.

    Custom wiseco (ICS) 9.5:1 pistons.
    135mm arrow connecting rods
S52 crank stuffed into m52 block
    acl rod bearings
    kolbenschmidts main bearings
oringed block with matching reciever groove in head
custom t4 twin scroll turbo mani built by myself
    custom 4in ss exhaust
etc etc ill have to add more as i remember but on to the pics.

    custom oringed block.

reciever groove cut into the head to recieve the oring in block.

Its hard to see in the pics but the head and block are both resurfaced to a very smooth almost mirror finish which will be critical in head gasket sealing.

cleaning and making sure the piston squirters are still functioning correctly then reinstalling.

Crank all balanced and polishd and ready to go.

after cleaning all journals out with alcohol and wiping them all clean i reinstalled the bearings and lubed them with sta-lube moly since its probably gunna be a while before she breaths fire.

torqued up and ready to go.

    checking endplay

picture of the goods going in the motor.

picture of the arrow rod which weighs in at 501.2 grams.

Assembled the rods to the pistons and almost lost an spiral lock along with an eye in the process.lol

Here she is at home after i filed the rings to fit.

I stopped after 1 pistons install because i came across something i wasnt too sure about. My piston is outta the hole by about .040 but ill have to get a more accurate measurement when i get my hands on a depth mic. so with my .080 copper gasket this will leave me with about a .040ish piston to head clearance and this is before the head gasket is torqued. Ill have to clay it to find out what im left with. According to wiseco's website import motors can get away with as little as .030 piston to head so we will see how this works out and contact george to see if this is normal since they were his pistons.

Ive had some free time since i got layed off a couple weeks ago so ive been doing as many free mods as possible. I dropped the rear subframe and decided to do some inspecting for tearing.

sure enough just as i suspected there was nothing wrong.

perfect except a little bito rust.

i figured since i was there i should reinforce it so i made a carboard cutout and traced it to some 1/8in steel i had laying around

and since its cheap to powder coat ive been trying to get as much done as possible.

ill try to update this as much as possible. Im open to opinion on the piston to deck hight though. If this were a honda it be together by now but since this is the first bmw im building im gunna make sure its right.

Looking good Bro! I wish I had measurements for my above deck height. It was under 0.030 as that is all my feelers go to..

very nice! they head clearance shouldn't be a problem.

In case anyone questions it the head looks that way because it was machined with a multi carbide cutter head. thats just they way they look, nothing wrong with it.

    Nice progress and pics.

I thought the 328's came with the subframe reinforcements.

    I see some familiar colour.

    Looks great!

BTW, don't worry about the clearance. Being that the pistons are custom, they should have been done the right way but it's not the end of the world. We've run as little as 0.020" clearance and haven't had a problem. It's really cool to pull the engine apart and see imprints of the valve on the piston from the combustion since things were so close.

Just be sure to clay it to be certain there is no contact.

just got off the phone with george, and he confirmed that is how the piston was designed so i will keep moving forward from this point.

The reason i chose 9.5:1 which is probably closer to 10:1 with the head being resurfaced 2x and the block 1 time is because compression makes power and spools the turbo faster.

after i eat some turkey ill have the rest of this bitch back together. I have a local racing shop here that i decided to do my machine work.

Pretty excited to see what you end up making with this motor John! As far as working after eating Turkey? Good luck man, all I'm good for after that is gasping for my next breath and sitting on my fat ass staring at the tv. I'm going in the garage now and eating after lol.

Really looking forward to see the outcome. I like the "higher" compression build.

Looks good so far. I have planned to go with about 9.5:1 compression whenever I get around to building up my motor. I will like to see the outcome here.

Nope, only M's cam with the reinforcements, AFAIK. I've never seen them on a 328, at least.
