Ok, It's late and I'm bored so I'm gonna throw this out there. I tried searching on this because I thought I'd seen something about it a while ago....but didn't find much.
Anyone have any experience with widening factory wheels?
I like my stock wheels, but would like the rears to be wider (10-11"?), so I've found a place in Plymouth MI http://www.weldcraftwheels.com/ that offers this service. I talked to a rep there, sounds like they do a nice job, and alot of their customers are drag racers, so I'm sure they're plenty strong. Basically they would cut the rim, and weld in a 2" section on the back section of the wheel, then balance the wheel
SO, factory setup is 17x9 +8, and this would change them to 17x11 +33 (if my calculations are correct?) just going 2" deeper into the wheelwell, the wheel-face is going to be the same position
So, is there room for this setup?
Need spacers?
Ridiculous idea and I'm stupid? haha
I hope this works because it's pretty cheap, i think roughly 3-400 bucks
I think you will need spacers, but never heard of this before. . .might be kwel.
Stock roadstars should sit flush against the wheel well with a +/-15mm spacer which should free up some more room on the inside.
I think there was a thread very recently with pics of someone widening stocks. Couple people have done it
Be the first here to do that, and post pics asap.
Oops, guess not.. ^
I think it was fluid motion recently that had posted
Dont know about the calculations but have seen this done several times in the sportbike world and never heard of any safety issues from them.... try it out and show us the results.
Why widen just the rears? It's the fronts that need to be wider...

Interesting idea. More dish would be sweet!

thanks for all the replies guys.
I think i may duct tape a 2" chunk o' wood on the backside of my rear wheels and just slowly push the car back and forth and see if it hits anything haha
The reason for just widening the back is that you won't really see the welded area, so it keeps it pretty cheap.... don't have to refinish the wheel. But I'm sure they could do both front and back, I'll have to ask them about that.
A few of you mentioned some guys already doing this, i'll need to search more and try to find those threads
+1 on widening the fronts to at least 8.5"
If you get someone to pull that off for you, there will be a following for sure! Think about instead of widening a front wheel, shrinking a rear roadstar.

Search for threads/posts by "tonym" he had an M roady with 11" wide roadstars. I believe he was active on here around 2004 or maybe 2005.

You would have to shave about 30-35mm off the hub of the wheel as well. That's almost an inch and a half. Not sure how feasible that is.
As for widening the rears, adding 2 inches to the inside of the wheel would change them to 17x11 ET42. So you would need about a 20mm spacer I would think.

Definitely would need spacers. A LOT of it.
protip: If you're reading the post above, it's probably a joke.

I think 8.5 front, 10 rear is a good setup; your available tires that aren't starting to stretch are greater. I like a decent stretch but you need a larger diameter wheel for these cars otherwise it looks odd in the rear, ask me how I know.

I'm talking about if you wanted to put rears (shaved down on the inside by .5") on the front. If you did that, you would have a 17x8.5ET-4. (That's minus 4)
So you would need to shave about 35mm off the hub to get a 17x8.5ET31 wheel.
But then again look at the link just posted. They were able to add width to the outside of the wheel. So you could just add width to the outsides of both your fronts and rears.
I would just add .5" to the outside front, and .5" to the inside. And on the rears, add .5" to the outside, and 1" to the outside. This probably wouldn't require a very big spacer.
