S38 and S70
Great engines, even when compared to most engines today. That said, they obv can't stand up to the 100> hp/displacement ratio of the BMW V10, etc.
Honourable mention for the M30 and M60

When it comes to reliability, the M50 stands as a king with the M40 as it's queen. One get's all the attention for low maintenance with all the rave, while the other is higher maintenance, but will laugh when she get's a few extra years of ruling by herself after her husband passes away.
For every day driving, all that can be said in this category is M57; the new diesel boy on the block. Period, end of story.
Now when it comes to just absolute screaming brutality on a race track with a blood thirsty soul that will make your spine tingle, the S65 stands above all else in my mind. Sure, BMW made more powerful engines (S85/N63/N73), and also engines with more torque (too many to list), but none of them in the last 15 years just sound so brutal and please the senses so much.
This is of course ONLY considering factory vs factory because we all know when it comes to aftermarket things, it is a whole different ball game where the S38 is the god everyone aims to copy.
S62. Every time I see one, I have to smile at the nonsense of it all.

What a sound... Awesome torque, and looks like a dinosaur. Is also tuff like one, this engine is bulletproof.
This car belong to a friend of mine, only 43.000km (19.000mls) is a 95 Euro model, factory 6 speed and 340hp, with a Supersprint Exhaust:

The way it increase the speed when the RPM goes up is just amazing, I mean, no low RPM torque at all.

I kinda agree with the people that say M50 but in relative to age terms only, very different motor to the M20. I believe the first mass production application of plastic intake manifolds too. Reliable, moddable. The alloy blocked M52's would've been better if not for that Nikasil issue.
As far as overall regardless of age, displacement I'd go for the latest and greatest which would probably be one of the motors from the current 335d, 335i or M3. The engineering of these is amazing.
lol ok? how is the s50b32 a better motor than the s54? i cant think of 1 way its better
also please let us know why the s54 is horrible?
n54 is just a boosted I-6 nothing really special
s62 and s85 are definitely good motors
op your question is too broad. best in terms of engineering/performance or just in terms or reliability?

Ignore him. He likes to troll about how bad S54s are and has no basis to back up his ridiculous assertions. Or maybe he got unlucky, had the infamous rod bearing problem, and is now extrapolating that to all S54s. Either way, it's silly and not worth even considering his opinion on the matter.

I believe the S54 is quite a good motor... the best i do not know.
the most reliable? i'm pretty sure it would be the old M30.
the most reliable and most efficient? M54
and yes, i've owned M50s and S50s before.

I'd say the N54, just look at how far that engine has gone in the short time it's been available. Now the true test is whether it'll last.
