I was cruising on the highway in 4th gear at about 60-70mph when for no apparent reason the car lost all power and shut down. I proceeded to coast off into the shoulder and restarted the car normally once I reached a standstill. I continued to drive for another hour and a half without problems.

I should mention that when this occurred the car had traveled for about 6 hours between 60-85mph in and out of 4th and 5th gear.

It’s a 1998 318ti with 70K.

I’m just wondering what may have caused this and if it should be of any concern, thanks.

sounds like an ecu issue. was the car like chugging. cuz if so than it could be a fuel delivery issue

Check your Cam Sensor. Symptoms from a CAm Sensor going bad are similar to what happened to you, car just dies and then you turn it on and its like it never happened. But find out if its the Inlet or Oulet Cam Sensor.
