Okay, so this is likely a little outside the normal direction. I have a 2006 Z4 coupe with sport suspension. I'm tired of getting beat up by the suspension. What can I do to detune, or soften the suspension?? Recomendations please.

Thanks, Beezer.

Ditch the runflat tires and then follow the inflation rules for the ///Ms - 31-32psi all around. That made my coupe feel like a completely different car for the 18" wheels.

I had 17" wheels on for the winter and liked it a lot more than the 18s but then tried using my track inflation numbers on the streets and found that it transformed the car into something that's lots more fun to drive.

AlanL, thanks. I've ditched the runflats and I'll check the pressure. Hopefully that will make a dif. I'm curious as to what the dif is beween the non-sport and sport suspension from the factory is.

if that doesn't work, why not opt for a camry?

You're probably better off selling the car, and getting something a bit more suitable. I'm not meaning to be rude or insulting - please don't take it that way, but you'll probably spend less money and retain more value in the car by trading it in for something else than you would in swapping out suspension components.

If you still want a convertible, but want a bit more smoothness, look into something like the 335i convertible - without sports option.

cuz I don't look as cool in a Camry. smile.

Trust me - the biggest difference I noticed in my car was getting the tire pressures below 33psi. There's something thats almost magic about going below that for ride comfort. I have some pretty nasty roads on my commute to work and was almost about to buy myself some 17" summer touring wheels and save the OEM 18s for the track when I stumbled onto the ///M inflation numbers.

I was quite surprised at how low BMW said to inflate the Contis compared to the numbers for the RFTs on the 3.0si but since we are running the same tire sizes it made sense to try out the ///M inflation numbers. Curiously enough I had already settled in on 32psi on all four wheels as the desired hot inflation number for track driving with my PS2s but hadn't actually tried that for daily driving.

I now understand why the folks who bought the ///Ms haven't been complaining about the ride of the car. The 3.0si with the Sport option and RFTs is a far rougher ride but it doesn't need to be that way at all.

Yikes! I had 36 in the front and 40 in the rear! I'll try lowering the PSI and go for a drive. Thanks!

Zuzax, I thought about your idea. In fact I checked with the dealer for trade in value. Sorry but I'm not interested in taking the beating the dealer wanted to give me for a year old car with 5K miles on it. The value of our beloved cars is in the toilet right now.

Yep, the tire pressure is often at strange levels stock; I often wonder how many reviews were influenced by press cars with the wrong air pressures.

The tire inflation numbers in my manual as well as on the door frame suggest 33F and 39R for the 18" RFTs. The resulting ride with the stiff sidewalls of the RFTs is best described as nasty. BMW doesn't offer any hints on what we should be running with non RFT tires but since we are running identical sizes as the ///M in a slightly lighter car those recommendations seem to be a more logical target for those of us who ditched the RFTs.

If you want to you can probably find someone with a non-Sport suspension who'd be willing to trade. Difference is (Sport vs. non-Sport): 0.6" lower springs, stiffer shocks and 1 mm greater swaybar diameter front and rear.

I have just recently purchased a Z4. I bought new tires the second day I had it, michelin Sport A/S. The difference between the stock RFT was crazy, the car was just smooth, not jarring.

if that isn't enough, get 16" wheels and tires

16" wheels won't fit with the brakes on a 3.0si to the best of my knowledge.

Tire pressure made a nice difference. Thanks. I'm down to 32 psi.
