View Full Version : Performance mods, that don't decrease MPG?
marcello7x 05-06-2008, 09:59 AM Just wondering what is out there if any, that can incerase performance without decreasing mpg.
I doubt there is much out there for great gains but it would be nice. Thats one thing i need to give vw/audi props for, their 1.8t and 2.0t engines gain tons of hp/torque with a tune, and also increase MPG!:buttrock

suspension upgrades...
Frustrat1on 05-06-2008, 03:33 PM It's not just Audi. Most upgrades that improve breathing / gas flow also increase MPG at "every-day" pace...
The RPI intake and better filter, better exhaust flow...
The problem with the Z4 si is that nobody will mess with the chip / tune so we're no place. But earlier years benefit from several tunes...
Nobodies gains also give better milage at the top of output when the output is substantially increased... But lots do at commuter pace when no displacement mods are made and things simply are more efficient
Anything that moves intake/exhaust gases better will usually enhance fuel consumption.
Consider losing the heavy dual mass flywheel. UUC makes a nice aftermarket part. Any reduction of rotating mass will improve gas mileage.
Nevertheless, do not expect such mods "tdo pay for themselves" even at present gas prices.

I just wouldn't want a mod to make me pay more than just the initial price/install!
RobMCoupe 05-07-2008, 08:52 PM Check if you have the charcoal/carbon filter that can be remove. This is a 15-20 mins mod that is free and allow your car to breath better.
WytLytnyn 05-08-2008, 02:48 PM Bigger brakes

15-20 minutes! maybe if you're blind. but then i guess you wouldn't have a car either...more like 2 minutes.

May not be a good idea if still under warranty:

i may be wrong but im pretty sure that the activated carbon filter in that post is different from the carbon air filter. the activated carbon filter is a cylinder that has something to do with the fuel delivery system.
Zuzax 05-08-2008, 06:20 PM i may be wrong... Yes you are wrong. The section with the little red star is about the activated carbon filter that is in the lid of the airbox. It provides no real plus or minus performance-wise, but it does have the potential to throw codes and make your dealer cranky about future engine-related warranty-able items.
There's an illustration of it in the section marked "Not OK", showing where it fits in the air filter assembly lid.
iranmeba 05-08-2008, 06:35 PM yea, i didn't bother scrolling down to look at pictures. my bad. funny thing, my car never had that. PO must have taken it out.

Your 3.0i never had the secondary charcoal air box filter because it doesn't have the S54 engine. The referenced SIB only applies to the S54 engined Bimmers.
RobMCoupe 05-09-2008, 12:40 AM Thanks for the correction. I thought they all have it for NA.

The 07 3.0Si also has the charcoal air filter.
Roffle Waffle 05-10-2008, 12:29 PM My car had this paper orange filter thing in the intake. I took it out and the car sounds and runs MUCH better
silversprint 05-11-2008, 04:59 AM Anything that adds weight to the car will decrease MPG. BIG brakes, big wheels, lots of stereo equipment.
Reducing weight will benefit both performance and MPG.
