I have an AA short shift lever (just the lever) removed from a '93 325i. As you can see in the pics linked below, it's in fine shape. There is some very, very light scoring on the ball from regular use (it's a few years old) and the part that is exposed under the car is a bit crusty, but shifting action was excellent when it was removed. I'm putting in a solid race shifter as part of a race car build, so this one is available. The lever gives a pretty low knob and a very short throw, but very smooth action--no notchiness. I didn't have any noticeable slop, either. It's a great unit.
