I am trying to hook up a system in my car where my music files will download from my computer to a hard drive in my car every time I pull into my garage. I was thinking of setting up some sort of 802.11 wireless network connection in my car.

Has anyone done anything similar to this?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

how far do u plan to be from the wireless gateway? if u plan to be close(like in your garage) then i would use a PCI adapter and plug a PCMCIA card into it so u dont have to worry about the PCI antenna. which in a car is gonna be quite large..a PCMCIA antenns is extremely small but still has good range....i have planned out a similar system although quite a bit more advanced if your gonna be limited to only the communication above....i use a wireless system at home and all my desktops are wireless....actually i am sitting on my bed typing this on my laptop which also has a wireless card.......

I am going to install a pioneer 6.5 custom screen with a AVM-P9000R brain. Im not sure how im going to connect a hard drive to it. Also, im not sure how I am going to be able to navigate the hard drive, maybe I will need a remote or wireless mouse.

100ft line of site and u should be fine with your application...a few of us had a good conversation on this very same issue last week...Charlie started the thread and shadow and i replied to it and maybe some others but not sure...do a search, and u should find it quickly...as for connecting a hard drive...we were all gonna use a ITX machine and i found one cheap with TV out so a non issue for your pioneer monitor.....wireless mouse is a good idea but i suggest u use a touchpad instead unless u find a ball mouse with a heavy ball....i hope your using WEP on your system...would hate for someone to steal those mp3s from your car ;)

Definitely make sure you use WEP if you are going with 802.11

You would not believe how easy it is to drive around and find open networks.....

I'm still working on my system ideas. I've found a co-worker that was a stereo installer in a past lifetime - I've determined his adult beverage of choice and we are discussing ideas....

Cool - I'll keep everyone updated as I slowly go insane....:)

I've kinda picked up on some of the ideas that have appeared here, along with what we've talked about...

I'm thinking about placing the screen in the space created by moving the OBC and sunglass holder - as many have talked about here....

I have pretty much decided that the computer will go in the trunk. I wanted to avoid running the cabling needed for that but I think it is the best option ....

This looks quite interesting - there's probably others out there - this is the first I found....

It's a software and connection package for talking with your car computer....

http://www.obd-2.com/

According to the site, it works with '96 and newer; however, I thought everything 94 and newer was OBD-II...hrm...

96 and newer is OBD-II or 95 M3's wouldnt be that valuable to tuners ;)
