View Full Version : intake and exhaust
slemmer 03-10-2001, 11:36 PM Greetings,
Can anyone suggest a brand (maximum bhp and torque) for a cold air intake and exhaust muffler? There are three or four out there but hearing from anyone who has used these items would be beneficial. Also, from what I've been reading, there isn't a performance chip available yet for this model.
Thanks
Rob Levinson 04-02-2001, 11:03 AM According to JimC, the 330 software (Shark Injector) and intake should be available "any day".
We have 330 owners calling us every day for it, we'll have them as soon as available.

slemmer 04-02-2001, 09:42 PM What about for a 323i?
Rob Levinson 04-03-2001, 01:18 AM The cold air intake for the 323i is currently available.

slemmer 04-03-2001, 06:04 PM Rob,
If I am reading the specs from your hyperlink it says that for my 323i application I could realize somewhere between 17 and 21 hp, and with torque between 8 & 17 ft.lbs.
Are you saying that there is software now for it but hasn't been productionized yet? If not, when?
Sounds like we're getting closer to a 'complete' package.
Thanks
Rob Levinson 04-03-2001, 06:22 PM Supposedly the software does indeed exist, but the delay has to do with the huge demand (and backlog) for Shark Injectors for E36s. They are testing the E46 Shark Injector now.
We are taking pre-orders so you can get a spot in line. Of course, orders will not be charged until shipped.

slemmer 04-05-2001, 07:18 PM Hmmm...let me ponder this twist of events. Would it matter what exhaust I put in (Bavauto vs Active Autowerke) in order to dial-in the chip so that it works best with the cold air intake and exhaust?
Rob Levinson 04-05-2001, 08:13 PM You're assuming one exhaust is as good or efficient as another. To keep from bad-mouthing competing units, I'll keep the things I know to myself.

slemmer 04-06-2001, 06:18 PM Rob,
Yes, I'm a 'little' ignorant in this area. Since I don't have any previous experience in this field, I'm depending on testamonials and spec sheets (and good advertising)that I can hopefully dig up. I didn't see any exhausts on the UUC website, unless I looked the wrong way. In a true competitive world it's not right to badmouth any competitor; just lay out the facts. Did you have anything to comment on that would require my private email? If so, you can send it to slem@ican.net
:(
Rob Levinson 04-06-2001, 06:46 PM For now, take a look at: http://216.182.53.5/exhaust/E46_sysU.htm
325/330 version coming soon.

If you're really interested in getting more HP out of your 323 (and surprising the hell out of other e46 owners), go for a supercharger from ERT. ;)

However, on a more serious note, the UUC exhaust is probably the best on the market. Most exhaust systems will net you the same HP and torque gains, the UUC however excels in its quality. Usually, people upgrade their exhaust for a different sound, lighter weight, and/or looks. The UUC unit costs a bit more, but it is very worth it...even AA changed its exhaust to a higher quality (and more $) unit after they realized that people are willing to spend more money and get a better exhaust.
On the CAI aspect, I think ECIS http://www.ecisbmw.com/ makes the best bang-for-the-buck CAI. It won't look as good as the JimC unit, but it'll get the same amount of air to the engine and cost you $200 less. Also, according to Boston Performance Group, the ECIS unit flowed a bit more than the JimC, especially when they put the ITG filter on the ECIS.
Good luck!

EvanL the reason AA changed there exhaust is beacuse there was flaws and they tried different styles .. LOL it has nothing to do with UUC
EvanL 04-09-2001, 10:11 AM Ok, sorry for my misinterpretation of data. I think the AA/UUC exhaust comparison and the AA change was discussed on the bimmer.org forum a while back, and that's where I got my info.
ImportFanatic 05-11-2007, 11:04 AM Bump for some good info. OLD THREAD! :rofl
Lizard1 05-11-2007, 11:29 AM I realize this thread is old but had a question about CAI
I tried to order the conforti CAI but I was told it was back-ordered and most likely take months :( Is the ECIS still the CAI that is equivalent to the performance obtained from JimC's? Or is there another I should look at - AFE?
TIA

I bumped it cause it had good info.
Check different vendors. I had issues getting the intake as well. I'm not sure, which one performs the best. Hopefully someone else can chime in.
pphil09 05-11-2007, 02:37 PM aFe baby!
Thats what I am planning on grabbing soon!
Smilez@EuroDyne 05-11-2007, 04:49 PM dinan baby thats what im planning from www.mileoneparts.com

Lizard1 05-11-2007, 05:08 PM FWIW - the sales rep at Turner indicated that the Conforti was superior to the aFe. This was after he told me that Conforti was on backorder and he didn't know how long it would take. He also sells aFe so it doesn't make sense why he would tell me that other than it being the truth?
I just want something that is:
1. Improves power
2. Not loud
3. Well built
4. Low maintenance - don't want to have to be "re-oiling" monthly
Lizard1 05-11-2007, 05:58 PM i figured i had already spent enough time on this and that most of the high-end CAIs would all be pretty similar so went ahead and purchased the aFe. Should get it in about a week so I'll let you all know how it does.
