I've got an MKII in my car, oem, and was alerted to check it out by someone here in the forum whose battery kept dying because supposedly the nav doesnt turn off. My old battery died and was unsure why. My new battery has low voltage if I let the car sit in the garage, unlocked, for more than a few days without driving it. I have checked the nav and yes it's on and stays on. Nav works but is so slow.
Does it ever turn off? If so how? Is it on because it is on standby per the doors are unlocked?
Or is it a sign that the nav is going out and no longer knows how to turn itself off? If so should I go to MKIII or straight to MKIV? and lastly who has a good place other than ebay lithuania to get a good deal on nav and widescreen....Plenty of questions...

I have the MK3 and suspect the same problem. But how are you determining that it stays on? Does the light on the unit itself stay on even after a few minutes?
Mine goes out. This was the second winter with my car and something was draining my aux. battery and messing with my nav screen on startup. (the smaller battery on top). Now that the warmer weather is here the problem has stopped. Just like last spring.

The light on the nav computer in trunk never turns off. For example, the car sat in the garage for a day or two, unlocked, opened trunk to check and both power and cd in lights were on.

Hey Puff,
Without a doubt....BimmerNav.com (www.bimmernav.com). I ordered my (remanned-and Perfectly Fine and warrantied!) from European Auto Source but I think they drop ship from Bimmernav. You can find the remanned MKIV upgrade and Widescreen (go remanned there too==unless you have an extra $1,600 to drop on a new unit!) and that'll do the trick.
As far as the battery.. it isn't just (if) the Nav unit. Our cars have a lot of "Live" electronics and they run 24/7 regardless. I picked up the BMW Advanced Battery Tender (pictured below), leave that hooked to my battery when my car is in my garage, and (now) have never had any problems. I would also recommend a new battery if your old one has been worn down to flat and recharged over and over.
Here's the charger I have:

and here's the other option (which requires you to leave the interior of your car open to plug the unit into the cigarette lighter plug):

Thanks Gatsby for the info. I'll definitely look into Bimmernav for the nav after I redo the sound and I'll go get a bmw trickle charger. lol my bike and car will be on a trickle charger..

Opening the trunk activates the nav unit. It's like opening the fridge to see if the light is still on. :D leave the trunk open for 2 min. then see if the light is still on.
